My system has just recently started doing that. what settings control this & where are they? I prefer to start it manually at a convenient time. 2-- Also, when it is compacting, I outlook express keep getting an error message that it can't finish compacing because another program is using the file. I'm not aware of any other prog doing that. How can I fix that so it will finish compacting. Thanks for all suggestions. Is the file outlook express compact that the compacting process cannot finish, the Folders.dbx file? Do you store the majority of your messages in the Inbox? Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? EAFiedler, Aug 2, 2008 #2 Rob1960 Thread Starter Joined: Mar 25, 2007 Messages: 144 I have Service Pack 3. This is a new computer and Windows XP Pro was just installed on it. These are DBX files. It isn't currently compacting, but I can easily start it again. I use OE as a business filing system. I do have a nearly 2000 of this year's inbox messages stored in "Inbox." Also nearly 3K messages in "SENT" files. For previous years, I've stored my SENT files in ten other folders, labeled by year back to 1997. It is some, but not all, of these previous year folders that aren't compacking. these are not separate identities, but rather sub-files on "Local folders." Here is the path of one folder that isn't compacting: "C:\Documents and Settings\..my name..\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{145AD50D-E929-4D37-A1C1-50B84BEE68F3}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\1- 2002.dbx " I don't see a folder specifically named "Folders.dbx." thanks. Robt Rob1960, Aug 2, 2008 #3 EAFiedler Moderator Joined: Apr 25, 2000 Messages: 14,042 The Folders.dbx file keeps track of all the other .dbx files. You will not see it with the other folders i
in Outlook Express. Messages in Outlook Express are compacted in order to speed up the work of Outlook Express and to decrease the space Outlook Express files take on the disk. It is also important that the more compact your files are the less probable it is that they will be damaged in case of any failure. Compacting your files in OE is really easy. To compact all files (and therefore all folders) used by Outlook Express, you should select Compact all folders in the File - Folder menu. This picture will help you better visualize this process. Also, you can compact not all, but separate folders. For instance, you can compact only the Inbox folder. To do it, select the folder you want to compact and select the Compact menu item. This will compact only the folder that is current in Outlook Express. There are some more important issues that should be kept in mind. Do not store all your messages in one folder. For example, it will be better if you make several subfolders for the Inbox folder and sort your messages in them. What for? In this case Outlook Express will store your messages in several files making it less likely that you will lose all your correspondence at once. Try to avoid keeping too many messages in one folder (it is recommended not to exceed the number of 2.000 messages). If there are too many messages, follow the first recommendation and divide the folder into several subfolders. Regularly (approximately once a month) compact your folders. If you extensively use e-mail, you can do it more often. The best way to ensure that your messages are safe and secure is to backup your data regularly.
