down vote accepted To report errors in the Event viewer, go to your php.ini and make sure logging is on. log_errors = On then enable error_log to write to syslog (with is the Event Viewer on Windows machines) error_log = syslog http://www.iis-aid.com/articles/how_to_guides/logging_php_to_windows_event_log share|improve this answer edited Nov 23 '15 at 11:35 Kasper Souren 4,29332661 answered Jan 21 '11 at 22:24 NeerPatel 541216 1 I'm wondering why this would be useful..wouldn't it be interspersed with lots of other OS/app logs? –Sandip Gangakhedkar Nov 14 '14 at 11:36 @SandipGangakhedkar - It's user preference. I personally like having a separate log file. But some people use network monitoring tools and they only look at Event Viewers or SysLogs. –NeerPatel Nov 14 '14 at 22:55 You also need to ensure error_reporting and log_errors_max_len are properly set. E.g. error_reporting=-1, log_errors_max_len=0. –Pacerier Aug 27 '15 at 17:02 @NeerPatel, How can we set it to server log not syslog (event viewer)? By server log, I mean whatever setting IIS is currently set to. –Pacerier Aug 27 '15 at 17:25 @Pacerier - By Server Log, do you mean text file? Are they really important? It depends on your definition of 'important'. The easy answer is no, they're not important. That's the reason they're classified as notices rather than warnings. It's okay to ignore them. However you should still pay attention to them, and try to fix them where possible. For example, the notice you quoted "Undefined index". This is caused (as I'm sure you're aware) by referencing an array element that hasn't yet been defined. It is best practice to prevent this notice from being raised by using isset(), because if you do that, then when you do still get the notice, you'll know it is important - maybe you made a typo in your variable name or array index? The code will still run, but it won't work properly, and getting the notice might be the first clue you have of that.

Or at least, I am trying to. When there is a syntax error in a PHP script and I open that file in my webbrowser, I just get an 503 "internal server error" and the default IIS error page for this error. Some browsers dont open that file at all, possibly because of the 503 HTTP Response Header. php error log I would like IIS to act in that case just like the apache webserver: display the PHP file with the error anyway, so that the error message gets printed out. It's "existingResponse" that needs to be set. You can set it by running the following (make sure to replace {sitename} with your site name). c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config "{sitename}" -section:system.webServer/httpErrors /existingResponse:"PassThrough" /commit:apphost share|improve this answer edited Sep 16 at 13:11 Burgi 1399 answered Oct 1 '09 at 2:31 Scott Forsyth - MVP 13.8k22346 I tried this and Sam Cogans suggestion - it tells me the changes are done, but I still receive a "internal server error" instead of the php sript with error messages. Why did it not work? –Max Oct 1 '09 at 15:29 Also turn off friendly error pages in IE if you haven't already. (Tools->Internet Options->Advanced) That can also mask the real message and is likely the secondary issue that you're running into now. –Scott Forsyth - M

Install and Configure PHP on IISImprove PHP Error Messages in IIS 7 Improve PHP Error Messages in IIS 7 By Tali SmithNovember 15, 2009Introduction PHP errors often do not provide sufficient detail to help diagnose errors that occur within the framework. These include basic errors such as 404 Not Found. Because of this, the default “detailed error” experience for PHP applications may be ineffective for troubleshooting basic errors. Internet Information Services (IIS) improves PHP error handling by intercepting common error conditions and providing redirection for common HTTP status codes. By default, IIS is configured to return detailed error messages to local clients and to return generic error messages to remote clients. This is done to allow effective troubleshooting locally, while protecting production applications from disclosing sensitive details to remote clients when errors occur. IIS generates very detailed error messages for most errors. These contain, at minimum, information about the request and the error, including which module generated the error and during which part of the request processing. For errors caused by IIS and its built-in modules, the errors also contain likely resolutions. This dramatically simplifies the troubleshooting process for most errors. This article, based on the hands-on labs in the PHP on Windows Training Kit, describes how IIS takes care of basic errors handling and how IIS diagnoses application-level errors by enabling PHP error messages. Basic Error Handling IIS improves PHP error handling by intercepting common error conditions and providing redirection for common HTTP status codes. Note that IIS also support error messages generated by application frameworks, which often offer application-specific information to help diagnose application errors. For example, Microsoft® ASP.NET takes advantage of this to provide detailed exception stack traces and other information. If you request the page http://loca
