Googling, I found that similar errors were evidently fixed by moving an ati dll from one graphics card load library to another, so I updated all of the graphics card software. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both jdk 8 and NetBeans 8. I tried installing both the 64 and 32 bit versions. I tried running it normally and as Administrator. None of that results in any joy - the error remained. It will stay running long enough for me to "Close all project
