Are Standard Error And Standard Deviation The Same Thing
Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons® 2011This article has been cited by other articles in PMC.I know of scarcely anything so apt to impress the imagination as the wonderful form of cosmic order expressed by the ``Law of Frequency of Error’’. … Whenever a large sample of chaotic elements are taken in hands and marshalled in the order of their magnitude, an unsuspected does standard error equal standard deviation and most beautiful form of regularity proves to have been latent all along. The tops of the marshalled row form a flowing curve of invariable proportion; and each element, as it is sorted in place, finds, as it were, a pre-ordained niche, accurately adapted to fit it.Sir Francis Galton (Natural Inheritance, 1889:66).BackgroundPhysicians often confuse the standard deviation and the standard error [6], possibly because the names are similar, or because the standard deviation is used in the calculation of the standard error. However, they are not quite the same, and it is important that readers (and researchers) know the difference between the two so as to use them appropriately and report them correctly.QuestionWhat are the differences between the standard deviation and standard error?DiscussionThe standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion, or scatter, of the data [3]. For instance, if a surgeon collects data for 20 patients with soft tissue sarcoma and the average tumor size in the sample is 7.4 cm, the average does not provide a good idea of the individual sizes in the sample. It could be that the sizes in the sample are similar

Bigger sample sizes are likely to have smaller error - this makes sense if you consider the formula for standard error, which uses square root of N for the denominator... I think I am right about this (I hope so, and hope that helps!) The SD is a measure of the dispersion of the data around the mean. If you have a sample (let us call it "sample 1") and you take some measur
