PC is a Dell Dimension 4600, 5 years old and has ran well until recently when I suffered from hangs/crashes/slow downs. A general clear out of programs etc seems to have alleviated this issue somewhat. So, the PC has Windows XP http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/windows-xp-sp3-fails-to-install-with-an-internal-error-occurred.139175/ (SP2), 2.5GB memory. I tried to upgrade to SP3 as follows:- I firstly uninstalled Malwarebytes AntiMalware which was the only protection s/w running other than Avira Antivirus and tried to install Windows XP SP3. It failed after about 10 mins with 'Access Is Denied'. I tried uninstalling the virus s/w (Avira) and ran the SP3 install again. This time it failed to install with 'An internal error occured'. This is an extract from the svcpack.log file when the install failed:- 110.360: AnalyzeDevices used 1953 ticks 110.516: AnalyzePhaseTwo used 156 ticks 110.516: AnalyzePhaseThree used 0 ticks 110.516: AnalyzePhaseFive used 0 ticks 110.657: AnalyzePhaseSix used 141 ticks 111.235: Trying CheckVLKForBlock again 111.735: Error: CheckVLKForBlock failed 111.813: Inventory complete: ReturnStatus=536741199, 54250 ticks 111.813: Num Ticks for invent : 54250 116.375: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2 116.375: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery. 116.375: An internal error occurred. 119.594: Message displayed to the user: An internal error occurred. 119.594: User Input: OK 119.594: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete. 120.469: Message displayed to the user: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete. 120.469: User Input: OK 120.469: Update.exe extended error code = 0x1ffe054f I then tried to reinstall SP2, just to see
XP SP3 RTM Build 5512 GO Service Pack 3 is a tad far from perfection May 10, 2008 10:47 GMT · By Marius Oiaga · Share: Users looking to Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, http://news.softpedia.com/news/9-Critical-Errors-that-Will-Prevent-the-Installation-of-XP-SP3-RTM-Build-5512-85266.shtml as Service Pack 2's second coming and the perfect reason to avoid Windows Vista SP1, might need to reconsider their plans. The reason is rather simple, despite the fact that it has spent over two months more time in development compared to Vista SP1, while containing only a minor, standard evolution in comparison to SP2, XP SP3 has come to the table with a flood of issues, a wide variety of them impacting windows xp the deployment process. There are no less than nine officially documented scenarios in which end users will find it unable to install Windows XP SP3, and even more error messages associated with the problems. 1. The XP SP3 RTM Infinite Reboot Loop Jesper Johansson was among the first to signal this problem after installing XP SP3 on an AMD-based computer, an operation which lead to: "incessant reboots. The computer booted, apologized for windows xp service not being able to boot properly, asked if I wanted to boot into safe mode, defaulted to normal boot, rebooted, and so on and so on. At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se. The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes." This is by no means an isolated case. In fact, end users have been crowding to the support forum for Windows XP SP3 signaling the very same problem, as well as variations from this issue. In response, Microsoft published Knowledge Base article 888372 detailing the issue. Essentially users are presented by a "Stop 0x0000007E" error message, having performed and upgrade to XP SP3 from SP2 on what Microsoft referred to as a non-Intel-processor-based computer. "After you upgrade a computer that uses a processor other than an Intel processor to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you may receive the following error message after you restart the computer: 'A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xFC5CCAF3, 0xFC90F8C0, 0xFC90F5C0) SYSTEM_T
