I am using Windows XP at office and Windows Vista Home Basic at home. I am unable to configure the IIS. I have tried to install the IIS from windows features. It is all getting https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/311766 properly installed and then if I type http://localhost/ it says page cannot be displayed and error is HTTP 404. At home, it is showing HTTP 404.4 error. I have IIS 5.1 at office and 7 at home... Please help me.. and this is a bit urgent. Any help will be appreciated... Thanks in Advance Reply usha.v 3 Posts Re: IIS localhost error Jun 29, 2007 04:24 AM|usha.v|LINK Hi, I was unable to view that website at office. Anyway, I am https://forums.iis.net/t/1127408.aspx?IIS+localhost+error unable to open the Default IIS page(iisstart.asp) in the IIS Server. My system is using a proxy server to connect to the Internet and even when I disable the proxy connection, http:\\localhost\ does not open and shows a 404 error. The pages, the files are all located in wwwroot folder. Are they any security permission constraints? I have Admin rights to this system. The HTML files and all other files work properly from the root directory, but vdir is not working (I created a Virtual Directory. It isdisplayed at IIS MMC). Local host and even the IP address doesn't respond. Kindly help. Please list out all the steps for viewing asp or html pages from Virtual directory. Thanks in advance. You say "http:\\localhost\ does not open and shows a 404 error" and then say "HTML files and all other files work properly from the root directory" - which is it? Those two statements conflict with each other. Did you mean to type http://localhost/ (forward slashes) ? Do you have a valid default document in the root? There are no special or extra steps to get a virtual directory to display pages if the root is already working. Because these error messages might reveal sensitive information to 500 internal malicious users, IIS 7 and above disables this feature by default. When your classic ASP scripts encounter an error in IIS, you receive the following error message by default: An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator. If you are the system administrator please click here to find out more about this error. You can customize the ASP 500 internal server script error message, and also determine whether to return the script errors to a Web browser. Note: As a best practice for security, you should only enable sending ASP script error messages to a Web browser on a development or test computer; returning script error messages to a Web browser can unintentionally expose more information than you intended to show. Working with User Access Control You need to make sure that you follow the steps in this document by using an account that has full administrative permissions. This is best accomplished by using one of two methods: Log in to your computer by using the local administrator account. If you are logged in using an account with administrative permissions but that is not the local administrator account, open all applications and all command prompt sessions by using the "Run as Administrator" option. These above conditions are required because the User Account Control (UAC) security component in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will prevent administrative access to the IIS configuration settings. For more information about UAC, see the following documentation: User Account Control Customizing Classic ASP Error Messages The configuration settings that you u
