Complete Example for Error Handlers Other Versions Visual Studio 2010 .NET Framework 4 Visual Studio 2008 This code example includes elements for both page-level and application-level exception handling. Code Example Files The example consists of the following files: Web.config Global.asax Default.aspx ExceptionUtility (to be put in the App_Code folder) GenericErrorPage.aspx HttpErrorPage.aspx Http404ErrorPage.aspx DefaultRedirectErrorPage.aspx iexplore exe application error Web.config The following example shows the Web.config file. The customErrors section specifies how to handle errors that occur with file types that are mapped to ASP.NET, such as .aspx, .asmx, and .ashx files. (In IIS 6.0 and in IIS 7.0 in classic mode, static content files such as .html and .jpg files are not mapped to ASP.NET.) The settings in the example customErrors section cause any unhandled HTTP 404 (file not found) errors to be directed to the Http404ErrorPage.aspx file. These HTTP 404 errors would occur if a request were made for an .aspx file, .asmx file, and so on and if the requested file did not exist. All other unhandled errors in ASP.NET files are directed to the DefaultRedirectErrorPage.aspx file. If static content files are not handled by ASP.NET, a request for a nonexistent .html or .jpg file does not cause a redirect to the Http404ErrorPage.aspx file. If you want ASP.NET to handle requests for all file types, you can configure IIS to map file-name extensions to ASP.NET. Note In the example, the mode attribute is set to "On" so that you can error messages when you run the example in Visual Studio. In a production environment, this setting would normally be "Remo

Here's how it looks: Global.asax: protected void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28768715/application-error-in-global-asax-not-catching-errors-in-webapi { Exception ex = Server.GetLastError(); string path = "N/A"; if (sender is HttpApplication) path = ((HttpApplication) sender).Request.Url.PathAndQuery; string args = string.Format("Path: {0}", path); // Custom code that generates an HTML-formatted exception dump string message = Email.GenerateExceptionMessage(ex, args); // Custom code that sends an email to the dev team. Email.SendUnexpectedErrorMessage("Some App", message); } One "minor" problem, though - when I intentionally have a part of the code throw an exception in order to test this mechanism... public static void GetMuffinsByTopping(string topping) { throw new Exception("Test Exception!", new Exception("Test Inner Exception!!!")); // Actual repository code is unreachable while this test code is there } The front-end JavaScript is immediately intercepting an HTTP 500 request, but the global.asax.cs code noted above is not being reached (I set a breakpoint on the first executing line of the method.) Question: In what way can I get the "old" Application_Error handler to dispatch error emails, so that our team's developers can more easily debug our application? c# asp.net-web-api error-reporting share|improve this question asked Feb 27 '15 at 15:34 Andrew Gray 1,3701630 1 You could abstract your error handling logic into a separate method that Application_Error calls, wrap the Web API method body in a try/catch,

So I simply do this in global.asax: void Application_error(object sender, EventArgs e) { SendMessageToAdministarator(Server.GetLastError().ToString()); } But actually many times Application_Error is called even though the application won't crash. And I wish to send mail to admin ONLY when the application crashed. Also, do I have a simple way to lift the application back on? I'm looking for the simplest solution. asp.net share|improve this error in application_error question edited Nov 14 '11 at 14:57 Jason Plank 2,12242338 asked Jan 12 '09 at 9:06 Hanan 6973927 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 48 down vote accepted What kind of errors are send when the application is not crashed? You could check the type of exception and don't send emails on the exceptions that don't crash the app (for example a redirect can throw the ThreadAbortException which I manually filter in code): protected void Application_Error(Object sender, EventArgs e) { Exception ex = Server.GetLastError(); if (ex is ThreadAbortException) return; Logger.Error(LoggerType.Global, ex, "Exception"); Response.Redirect("unexpectederror.htm"); } You could add a redirect to an error page with a message for the user that an error has occured and some links to relevant pages in the site. This is for the 'lift the application back on' - I hope this is what you wanted. Also you might look into logging with log4net which can also log errors on the server and send emails on errors. share|improve this answer edited Oct 20 '11 at 15:43 Josh Stodola 54.6k33147204 answered Jan 12 '09 at 9:18 rslite 35.8k43444 Thank you very much. If you are getting different results most likely there is a flaw in the test case. Without seeing all your code it is difficult to provide any assistance. BTW, unhandled exception page handlers can be configured in the web.config. Please see the following MSDN documentation. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397417%28v=vs.140%29.aspx Reply baruchb1 Member 44 Points 245 Posts Re: Application_Error in Global.asax not firing Dec 24, 2014 02:08 PM|baruchb1|LINK All code was provided in my initial post. If so, in that window there is Exception settings and uncheck checkbox with message "Break this exception type is user un-handled". You can also do global error handling by adding following entry in Web.Config
