Complete Example for Error Handlers Other Versions Visual Studio 2010 .NET Framework 4 Visual Studio 2008 This code example includes elements for both page-level and application-level exception handling. Code Example Files The example consists of the following files: Web.config Global.asax Default.aspx ExceptionUtility (to be put in the App_Code folder) GenericErrorPage.aspx HttpErrorPage.aspx Http404ErrorPage.aspx DefaultRedirectErrorPage.aspx Web.config The following example shows the Web.config file. The customErrors section specifies how to handle errors that occur with file types that are mapped to ASP.NET, such as .aspx, .asmx, and .ashx files. (In IIS 6.0 and in IIS 7.0 in classic mode, static content files such as .html and .jpg files are not mapped to ASP.NET.) The settings in the example customErrors section cause any unhandled HTTP 404 (file not found) errors to be directed to the Http404ErrorPage.aspx file. These HTTP 404 errors would occur if

How to: Handle Application-Level Errors Other Versions Visual Studio 2010 .NET Framework 4 Visual Studio 2008 .NET Framework 3.0 Visual Studio 2005 This code example shows how to create an error handler in the Global.asax file that will catch all unhandled ASP.NET errors while processing a request — in other https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/24395wz3.aspx words, all the errors that are not caught with a Try/Catch block or in a page-level error handler. In the example, the handler transfers control to a generic error page named GenericErrorPage.aspx, which interprets the error and displays an appropriate message. Example The following example is from a complete code sample in Complete Example for Error Handlers. Security Note Never set customErrors to Off in your Web.config file if you do not have an Application_Error handler in your Global.asax file. Potentially compromising information about your Web site can be exposed to anyone who can cause an error to occur on your site. C#VB Copy void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Code that runs when an unhandled error occurs // Get the exception object. Exception exc = Server.GetLastError(); // Handle HTTP errors if (exc.GetType() == typeof(HttpException)) { // The Complete Error Handling Example generates // some errors using URLs with "NoCatch" in them; // ignore these here to simulate what would happen // if a global.asax handler were not implemented. if (exc.Message.Contains("NoCatch") || exc.Message.Contains("maxUrlLength")) return; //Redirect HTTP errors to HttpError page Server.Transfer("HttpErrorPage.aspx"); } // For other kinds of errors give the user some information // but stay on the default page Response.Write("<

There are enormous articles written earlier for this topic. I have tried writing this article for beginners explaining these concepts in simple language and step-by-step.This is a very basic article for beginners that show exception handling and error handling techniques in ASP.NET.Where there are codes, the chances for exceptions / error always exist so it is very important for developers when developing web applications to understand the errors and implement the error handling techniques to avoid breaking pages or providinig unhandled errors to end uses. What

My question is how should I be handling errors in my app? Should I be wrapping all methods in try/catch? Should I just wrap the methods in the business layer with the try/catch? How would I handle errors that occur in the PortalLayer with the WCF Ajax methods? For example I added the following to my Global.asax file: void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Code that runs when an unhandled error occurs Exception exc = Server.GetLastError(); if (exc is HttpUnhandledException) { if (exc.InnerException != null) { exc = new Exception(exc.InnerException.Message); Server.Transfer(@"\Pages\Error.aspx?handler=Application_Error%20-%20Global.asax", true); } } } However most of the time this isnt getting called. I just see error an error message show on the screen (Like a glorified alert). Or if this method is called then exc is not HttpUnhandledException so the transfer never takes place. I also tried this in my web.config but I don't see that this does anything. (If I comment it out I get the same results)
