POST errors are logged in to the SEL. BIOS Error Messages During POST, if an error is detected, the BIOS displays an error code and message on the screen. error messages are preceded by the string Error to highlight the fact that the system may be malfunctioning. All POST errors and warnings are logged in the SEL. Port 80h POST Codes During the POST, the BIOS generates diagnostic progress codes (POST codes) to I/O port 80h. If the POST fails, execution stops and the last POST code generated is left at port 80h. This code is useful for determining the point where an error occurred. Displaying the POST codes requires a PCI bus add-in card, often called a POST card. The POST card can decode the port and display the contents on a medium such as a seven-segment display. The tables below offer descriptions of the POST codes generated by the BIOS. Some codes are repeated in the tables because that code applies to more than one operation. BIOS Beep Codes Whenever a recoverable error occurs during POST, the BIOS displays an error message describing the problem (see Table 67). Now, on cold boot, I get a beep pattern (beep---beep-beep---beep-beep-beep---beep-beep-beep) that doesn't match anything I can find. The Gateway splash screen remains fro over a minute even if I press DEL or F12. Eventually, it either responds to the key press or I get "Starting Windows" and then a blank screen for maybe beep codes 1-11/2 minutes. Eventually, it boots to the Windows 7 log-in screen and then it works fine. MemTest86+ finds nothing wrong. SMART data on my boot SSD shoes no errors. I do not understand what is causing (a) the beeps, (b) the long delay before the BIOS is executed, and (c) the long delay before the login screen appears. Hope someone can help.
