It is normal for the computer to make one or two short beeps during the startup process or during a BIOS update. Let the process continue and do not interrupt it. However, if the computer beeps and Windows does not start properly, a more serious hardware problem exists. The most common problems that cause beeping sounds are: Memory and heat-related failures caused by a build-up of dust in critical cooling areas A keyboard key is stuck A memory DIMM or hard drive cable is not seated properly A component on the motherboard has failed A basic computer function was unable to start What to do when beep codes occur Listen to the beeping sound and write down the number of beeps before each pause, if the beeps are long or short, or if the beeps high or low in tone. My computer does nothing when I try to start it up except beep three times. Nothing appears on the monitor, and no lights turn on on the mouse or the keyboard. This is not a memory issue. Did you try reseating the modules? –nhinkle♦ Jun 5 '11 at 3:40 How do you know it's not a memory problem? Sure sounds like it could be a possibility to me. Other things to try: Reseat everything (memory, boards, plugs, etc.) and make sure everything is snug. Try again; if you do get in, run diagnostics. If that doesn't work: remove any extension boards such as graphics (but only if you have on-board to fallback to), and see if one of those has gone belly-up. –Kerri Shotts Jun 5 '11 at 3:43 I think it is a coincidence that the update just happened to occur at the same time as the beeping. It sounds like a memory issue to me. Wha
