VBA up vote 0 down vote favorite I have a workbook which is throwing this error on opening. When it does and I open the VBA module, the current line is the definition of a sub. But the only option is to kill the whole Excel process. I've got custom document properties, I've got embedded combo-box controls, I have no clue what it might be, and automation error catastrophic failure excel 2016 Excel isn't helping. However, when I open the same file on another computer - it doesn't throw the error. Does anyone have any experience or advice with this kind of error? Here's the Open code, but the 'Show Next Statement' command doesn't point here when the error occurs: ```` Private Sub Workbook_Open() Dim ans If Range("currentstatus") Like "*Ready for Year-End Preparation*" Then ans = MsgBox("This workbook is ready for Year-End Preparation" & vbCrLf & "Would you like to begin?", vbYesNo) If ans = vbYes Then Range("Phase") = "Year-End" SheetsSet 3 End If End If 'Exit Sub If Range("Phase") = "Commissions" Then If Range("currentstatus") Like "*RVP/Dept Head Approved*" Then ans = MsgBox("Commissions have been approved for " & Range("applicablemonth") & vbCrLf & "Would you like to enter data for the new period?", vbYesNo + vbQuestion) If ans = vbYes Then Range("ApplicableMonth") = Format(DateAdd("m", 1, CVDate(Range("applicablemonth"))), "YYYY-MM") Range("CurrentStatus") = "Ready for Data Entry for " & Range("ApplicableMonth") ' now reset the summary page Prot False, "Commission Form Summary" Range("SalesPersonComplete") = Range("Summary") Range("RVPComplete") = "" Range("BrMgrComplete") = "" Prot True, "Commission Form Summary" Sheets("Menu").Select ' MsgBox "Begin." I wrote macros and user defined functions in my spreadsheet, which can also import dynamic data from quote system. In addition, I also select a new web query. Everything looks fine but after http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/excel-questions/17200-help-%22automation-error-catastrophic-failure%22.html I close the spreadsheet and reopen it, it just shows "Automation Error, Catastrophic failure" and it seems that the spreadsheet got stock when calculating the UDF. Please help! I think a macro and UDF should work well in the same spreadsheet, right? Dennis I can't 'find "ISMISSING" in the reference. I'm using Excel 2000 with XP. I don't know if that is the reason but I got another weird problem: I wrote a small macro to call Solver in the questionable spreadsheet. It only has four spreadsheets initially but after I
VBA / Office Integration > Excel > Shared workbook error : "Catastrophic failure." !! I have developed a Shared Excel workbook with lots https://bytes.com/topic/visual-basic/answers/800593-system-error-catastrophic-failure-ms-excel of macros and visual basic code behind it. It's been working great, but this morning when I opened it, an error box popped up that said "Automation error. Catastrophic failure." Selecting catastrophic failure "OK" pulled up the VB editor, which was useless since you can't view any code on a Shared folder. Excel also froze up on me (forcing me to restart it). Everyone on the network had the same problem (we're all on Windows 2000) except our secretary (for some reason we were never able to figure out...). Then we did the following procedure: automation error catastrophic 1. Open the workbook, disabling the macros (all of our security levels are set to Medium). 2. Turn the "Sharing" property off. 3. Save. 4. Turn the "Sharing" property back on. 5. Close the workbook. It doesn't really make sense, but the next time we tried to open it (enabling the macros), it worked, and hasn't given us any trouble since. The problem is that this workbook is for a client, and we want to fix it so that the error is not generated again--and since we were never able to find the cause, we don't know what changes we need to make. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this type of error? One other question. We also noticed that the when the workbook is Shared, the act of saving and closing the file (even when you don't make any changes!) adds about 1 MB to the th file size! However, if you turn "Sharing" off and then turn it back on, it resets the file size to the original. Any ideas on how to keep it from blowing up? Thanks!! spartain View Public

System Error : Catastrophic Failure in MS excel P: 48 santoshsri Hello, While opening an excel worksheet having macros , I get Error "System Error &H8000FFFF Catastrophic failure". When I click on Ok button , I see another message box as Microsoft Visual Basic : Out of memory , what does it mean ? My PC has 2 GB ram with 3 Ghz P4 processor. I don't see any memory shortage problem. I can open and work on same worksheet successfully on other PCs of same configuration. Can anyone please help me on troubleshooting this issue ? Jun 26 '08 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 1 Reply Expert 100+ P: 1,295 kadghar I recomend you to check your macro security options. Open an empty Excel, and check Tools>Options>Security>Macro's Security Set it to the lowest level so it wont report or block any macro. Then close Excel, and then open it with your file. If it refuses to open it again, i think you'll have to re-instal your office.
