Excel 2010, saving workbooks as .xlsm. After 3 days into my current project, I started getting an Unspecified Error, followed by a Catastrophic Error. I can't save, I can't do anything except close the window, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20645035/unspecified-error-then-catastrophic-error-vba-may-have-something-to-do-with-lis when about 5-15 Catastrophic Errors pop up, file is not saved, and I have to pick up where I last saved or autosave kicked in. After it happens once, it happens every 5-30 min until I revert to an older save. Then I get a couple days before it starts happening again. It's ridiculous because this project should take about 1/3 the time it is taking me because of this error. I am only posting now because I can't for the life of me figure out why this error is occurring. I have built much bigger programs before that behave very similarly, but this one keeps crashing. Some differences from my usual techniques that I have noticed and tried to leverage to pinpoint the problem: -I am referencing the name of the workbook from a function so that if someone runs this macro from another sheet, it will always do work in the correct sheet -I am using multiselect listboxes that point to defined tables within excel worksheets. These tables are refreshed often with OLEDB connections and then the listbox is reset via .rowsource property. -I am using different frames to show/hide a group of controls, all overlappin

It has been working fine, but this morning when I opened it and enabled the macros I got the message: "Automation error. Catastrophic failure." This opened the VBA editor, which was useless since you can't even view code in a Shared workbook. Then Excel crashed. Several people on the network tried to open the file, and got the same error message (and resulting crash...) Finally, we re-opened the file, disabled the macro, and removed "Sharing" (so I could view the code when the error occured)--but couldn't get the error to occur again, even after reinstating the "Sharing" property. It's been working since, but this workbook is actually for a client, so I would like to make sure it doesn't happen when they are using it (clients don't like words like "Catastrophic" or "Failure" on their computer screens). Anyone have any experience with this type of error message or know what might be causing it? Thanks! During testing i've discovered that Excel throws a 'Catastrophic Error - 2147418113' error message when 2 users simultaneously try to connect to the same Excel database. The error only occurs on the "slower" user and i've trapped it at the 'Connection.Open' method. I've tried to handle this error by using On Error Goto and retrying the connection, but Excel only retries once and then ignores the On Error Goto and displays the error. Can someone please assist me in modifying the code to continously retry the ADODB connection until successful? Sub Open_Excel_Connection() Retry: Const ConnectionString As String = _ "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=...DO NOT USE - Alternate Hierarchy Log.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;" Set Connection = New ADODB.Connection Connection.ConnectionString = ConnectionString On Error GoTo Retry: If Connection.State = ObjectStateEnum.adStateClosed Then Connection.Open On Error GoTo 0 End Sub Formatting tags added by mark007 Thank you, Reply With Quote 01-12-2010,01:38 AM #2 xld View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles Distinguished Lord of
