The coins are issued approximately every three months in the order that the Presidents served, and the coin series is expected to extend until 2016. The size, weight, and metallic composition of these new dollar coins are identical to the Sacagawea dollars (which are being minted concurrently). New to this series is the use of edge lettering. Some of the standard U.S. coinage legends as well at date and mintmark have been moved to the coin’s edge. This novel edge lettering is the source of many of the error coins which have surfaced. The edge lettering is not placed on the coins as they are struck, but in a separate post-striking process. Struck coins are moved in large tote bins from coin presses to edge lettering machines. Once moved, the coins are run through an edge lettering machine. By design, the coins enter the machine randomly so the placement of the lettering on the edge as well as the orientation to the obverse and reverse is entirely random. These variations therefore are not errors. As the struck coins are forced through the edge die, many possible scenarios exist for variations to the inscriptions including improperly spaced edge lettering, partial or missing edge lettering, and doubled edge lettering (if the coins should happen to run through this process twice). Description & Analysis George Washington was the first coin of the golden dollar series honoring Presidents of the United States. While the initial fervor of the new series pushed up mintages, the coins didn't circulate and most are still in storage at banks around the country. The Presidential dollar coin series was the first series the U.S. M
applying the edge lettering to the coins. The Mint uses a special two step minting process that leaves plenty of room for error. This page will explore some of the error coins that have occurred that are unique to the Presidential Dollar http://presidentialdollarguide.com/presidential-dollar-error-coins/ series. Edge Lettering Inscriptions The Edge inscriptions on Presidential Dollars contain the date, mint mark, http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page33.html the motto "E Pluribus Unum," and the motto "In God We Trust." After some public controversy, the latter motto was moved to the obverse of the coin starting in 2009, however the remaining elements remained on the edge of the coins. The minting process for Presidential Dollars struck for circulation occurs in two steps. In the first step, blanks coin error are fed into a coining machine. This machine strikes both sides of the coin and dispenses them into a large bin. Next, coins from the bin are fed into an edge-incusing machine, which produces the edge inscriptions. Upside Down Lettering As a result of the minting process described above, edge lettering occurs without regards to the heads-tails orientation of the coin. As such, so-called upside down lettering 2007 george washington is not an error. Statistically 50% of Presidential Dollars should have edge lettering heads-side up and 50% should have edge lettering tails side up. Third party grading service PCGS designates edge lettering as "Position A" or "Position B". Some collectors will seek one example for each position. Proof coins are struck using a different process than non-proof strikes. The edge lettering is actually applied when each coin is struck by using a three piece collar. As a result, the edge lettering on proof coins should always appear heads-side up and in the same location on the circumference of the coin. Proof Presidential Dollar coins with upside down lettering would be considered errors. Missing Edge Lettering One of the first new error types to surface for the Presidential Dollar series was the "Missing Edge Lettering" Error Coin. This are also sometimes referred to as "Smooth Edge Dollars." This error occurs when coins do not reach the second step of the two step minting process. You will recall that the first step strikes the obverse and reverse designs of the coin and the second stage produces the edge lettering. The error is most commonly found on George Washington Presidential Dollars. An estimated 100,000 to 200,000 were released into circulation. The error occurred less commonly on John Adams Dollars. For the next following issues the er
mint mark, "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and "IN GOD WE TRUST". In 2009, "IN GOD WE TRUST" was removed from the edge and added to the obverse. This page will chronicle the edge of the Presidential Dollars. Here you'll find information on edge varieties and errors. Every variety or error can't possibly be listed. What will be listed are the more notable varieties and errors with emphasis on those that are collectible, i.e. in sufficent enough quantities to be available to any numismatist seeking one. EDGE LETTERING INSCRIPTION 2007 - 2008 2007 NO DOT AFTER DATE 2008 DOT AFTER DATE Edge lettering includes date, Mint mark, "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and "IN GOD WE TRUST". The 2007 Dollars have a "dot" between "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST". A "dot" does not exist between the date/mintmark and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on 2007 dated Presidential Dollars. An extra "dot" was added to the edge of the 2008 Presidential Dollars between the date/mintmark and "E PLURIBUS UNUM". 2007 P E PLURIBUS UNUM · IN GOD WE TRUST · 2008 P · E PLURIBUS UNUM · IN GOD WE TRUST · 2009 - Present Beginning with the 2009 William Henry Harrison Presidential Dollar, "In God We Trust" appears on the obverse of it and all succeeding Presidential $1 Coins. As a result, the edge lettering of the 2009 Presidential $1 Coins is different from that of the 2007 and 2008 Dollars. Where in 2007/2008 there were single dots (delimiters) between the inscriptions, beginning in 2009 there will be three stars between the date/mintmark and "E Pluribus Unum" and ten stars between "E Pluribus Unum" and the date/mintmark. 2009 P E PLURIBUS UNUM Interesting Note: It was reported on this site, as well as many other sites, that the 2009 Presidential Dollars would have edge let- tering consisting of seven stars, followed by the date/MM, followed by six stars, followed by "E Pluribus Unum". However, it was pointed out to us that instead they have the same edge lettering as the 2009 Native American $1 which is ten stars, followed by the date/MM, followed by 3 stars, fo
