On most machines after upgrading FMS we are now getting a General SQL Error: General SQL error. [Microsoft][SQL Native Client] SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. [Microsoft][SQL Native Client] An error has occurred while error [08s01] [microsoft][sql native client]communication link failure establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. [Microsoft][SQL Native Client] Login timeout expired Alias: dbCheckLogin I've checked everything I can think of, firewalls are off on both server and client, fmsconnect.ini is correct, sever is accessible from the clients experencing the problem, checked the entry for the SIMS_FMS_DATABASE User DSN under ODBC which is correct and even rebooted the affected client as suggested in one KB article on SupportNet. When trying to login to SIMS after upgrading on these clients we are getting reason 0 errors. I've worked through the various fixes and nothing appears to make a difference The server is running SQL 2008 SP2 and yesterday I upgraded the OS from Windows Server 2008 SP2 x64 to Windows Server 2008 R2 as it is supported from the Autumn 2010 release - I'd upgraded to Autumn 2010 prior to the OS upgrade. My gut feeling is that the upgrade as done somthing to SQL and that the reason it no longer works, but what? Send PM 22nd December 2010,11:24 AM #2 adamf Join Dat

caused by something not that complex. As the case always is once you have the solution. So I thought I would share some of https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/spike/2010/06/21/error-locating-serverinstance-specified-xffffffff-sqlsrv32-to-the-rescue/ the things that I've come across, and hopefully tha "Error Locating Server/Instance Specified https://scn.sap.com/thread/1896988 [xFFFFFFFF]". SQLSRV32 to the rescue. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Michael Aspengren - MSFTJune 21, 20102 0 0 0 When connecting to SQL Server and when the connection fails the reason for the error may sometimes be a bit unclear. For this example I have a SQL Server 2008 instance called Spike2008 running on a communication link machine called SpikeSrv2008 (running on Windows Server 2008). So the full name of the server is SpikeSrv2008\Spike2008. If trying to connect to it from a command prompt using sqlcmd it will show the same error for both incorrect server name and incorrect instance name. Incorrect server name: C:\Users\maspeng>sqlcmd -S SpikeSrv2009\Spike2008 HResult 0xFFFFFFFF, Level 16, State 1 SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error communication link failure Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0 : A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. Incorrect instance name: C:\Users\maspeng>sqlcmd -S SpikeSrv2008\Spike2009 HResult 0xFFFFFFFF, Level 16, State 1 SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0 : A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. As we can see, the errors are identical. However, this is an ideal situation since we know that either the server name or the instance name is wrong. But if you are not sure which one is incorrect (we are assuming that we know that the server is up and running and can be connected to from other machines). What you can do to get a bit closer to what is
