I can't find any documentation on what if any errorlevel codes are returned. For example copy x y if %errorlevel%. eq 1. ( echo Copy x y failed due to ... exit /B ) else ( if %errorlevel% eq 2. ( echo Copy x y failed due to ... exit /B ) ... etc ... ) windows batch-file share|improve this question asked Nov 21 '11 at 21:55 Bill Ruppert 5,33671540 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active copy error code 36 oldest votes up vote 25 down vote accepted I'd opt for xcopy in this case since the error levels are documented (see xcopy documentation, paraphrased below): Exit code Description ==== =========== 0 Files were copied without error. 1 No files were found to copy. 2 The user pressed CTRL+C to terminate xcopy. 4 Initialization error occurred. There is not enough memory or disk space, or you entered an invalid drive name or invalid syntax on the command line. 5 Disk write error occurred. In any case, xcopy is a far more powerful solution. The equivalent documentation for copy does not document the error levels. As an aside, you may want to rethink your use of the %errorlevel% variable. That has nasty ramifications (at least in some versions of Windows) if someone has explicitly done something silly like: set errorlevel=22 In those cases, the actual variable will be used rather than grebbing the actual error level. The "normal" way of doing this is (in decreasing order since errorlevel is a "greater than or equal to" check): if errorlevel 2 ( echo Copy x y failed due to reason 2 exit /B ) if errorlevel 1 ( echo Copy x y failed due to reason 1 exit /B ) If you are running Win7 or Win Server 2008 or later, you should look into Robocopy, which is now the preferred mass-copy solution..

Then move the zip to the target and expand the zip on the destination. If all this stuff to move is in a folder then right (control) click on the folder to bring up the finder's contextual menu and select Compress to produce the zip file. WinSCP translates the numerical codes to a textual description for you, so you do not have to remember them. The SFTP server should also provide a meaningful textual description of the error itself. WinSCP includes the server-side description in its error message, labeled "Error message from server". Such description can include more detailed information than WinSCP can possibly deduce from the numerical code. Code 4 (Failure) Codes List References Code 4 (Failure) Note that not all servers use all codes. Most SSH/SFTP servers, including the most commonly used OpenSSH, support only SFTP version 3 that defines only codes 0 to 8. Advertisements: These servers would generally use code 4 (Failure) for many errors for which there is a specific code defined in the later versions of SFTP protocol, such as: Renaming a file to a name of already existing file. Creating a directory that already exists. Moving a remote file to a different filesystem (HDD). Uploading a file to a full filesystem (HDD). Exceeding a user disk quota. In this case the server is required to provide meaningful description of the error itself (see above). Unfortunately, OpenSSH SFTP server uses always description "Failure". Is such case, there is unfortunately no way to tell a reason of the failure. Codes List Code Name Description Comment 0 OK Indicates successful completion of the operation. 1 EOF An attempt to read past the end-of-file was made; or, there are no more directory entries to return. 2 No such file A reference was made to a file which does not exist. 3 P
