My old computer suddenly got a corrupted user profile. When trying

to log on, I get an error saying "Windows could not load the locally stored user profile, etc". I fixed this twice with chkdsk /f /r, but that no longer works properly. Don't http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-performance/error-copying-file-or-folder-cannot-copy-ntuser/cd053525-9c64-47ea-8961-b3d80d9e4290 know if I should make a new profile or not, so here is my question: Can I replace my ntuser.dat with the one located in "WINDOWS\repair"? It was last modified a few months ago (when I reinstalled Windows) Will I lose my settings entirely? Also, for some reason, my "Documents and Settings\Administrator" folder does not exist (if it ever did). EDIT - My ntuser files are "ntuser.dat" http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1976288/corrupt-ntuser-dat-replace-copy.html and "ntuser.dat.log". I renamed them to .old just in case. So now they are "ntuser.dat.old" and "ntuser.dat.log.old". More about : corrupt ntuser dat replace copy Chicano 13 January 2014 03:42:11 The ntuser file at WINDOWS\repair is from the default user, what you need is a "ntuser.backup" located in your user profile folder.. unhide files and folder from the Tools > Folder Options > View > "Show hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected system files (recommended)... you should have at least one backup of ntuser. First rename or move to another folder the old ntuser.dat (which you have already done) and next rename the ntuser.backup file to ntuser.dat, and restart the computer. The user account should be restored to the date of the ntuser.backup which means the settings you have changed since that date will be lost. This will change the account registry data so backup personal files to prevent possible loss.... m 0 l Can't find your answer ? Ask ! Publish Related resources NTUSER.DAT corrupt? The entire profile is about 5gb. Attempting to use the FSTW to move user data to new Dell D810. When the wizard is compressing files on the old machine, when it gets to ntuser.dat, it errors out and says it cannot be copied. Three choices; retry, abort, ignore. Obviously retry does nothing and abort quits the whole copy ntuser process. It seems that MS fix for this sort of error is to upgrade to Sp2. Seems silly to do that when the machine is going to be reimaged after this refresh..... plus there's always the chance of irrepairable damage. So that leaves ignore. Anyone think it's possible to simply ignore that file for now, let the wizard do its thing, hopefully with no other errors, do the resotre on the new machine and after the logout copy the ntuser.dat file copy ntuser.dat to from old to new? The new machine is running Sp2, and is on a domain (so is the old one, BTW). It holds part of their registry. It turns out that it couldn't copy all kinds of files, 18 total, mostly dat files. I was able to copy over the ntuser.dat and ntuser.dat.log files though, so everything seems to have worked there. After I logged back in and started Outlook, none of the PST files could be found. The wizard had not copied them over, even though they were in My Documents. Copied those manually and it seems to be OK.
