So the registry key has this. HKEY_USERS\TEST\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband I called it Taskband.reg I then create and run as administrator a bat file with the following contents: reg load HKU\TEST c:\Users\default\ntuser.dat reg import taskband.reg reg unload HKU\TEST The registry loads and unloads fine I just get the above error message when it tries to import. Let me know if you need more info. Then check if issue could be solved. Tested on my side, if no file path, will receive the same error. EDIT:Do remember to backup your registry settings before you doing any changes. The rest http://www.grownupgeek.com/ntuser-dat-copying-error of message said "It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs http://superuser.com/questions/598665/unable-to-load-ntuser-dat-for-a-currently-non-logged-user using the file and try again." Have since googled the error message and found NTUSER.DAT is an essential registry item/file not to be tampered with. How then can I successfully backup all my C: drive files? I need to send this laptop out for repair asap before any further problems occur on the PC and I lose my files which copy ntuser I am attempting to backup. Thanks so much. The easiest thing to do is instead of copying your entire "User" folder under Documents and Settings, only copy/backup dat to another your "My documents" and maybe "desktop" folders, and any other photos like "my photos" - this will get a backup of only your data-files/folders without that NTUSER.DAT file. OR You could log-on as a different user with Administrator rights, then copy your entire User-folder for your other account - but this is more complicated. I logined as Admin and launched regedit. I tried to load HKEY_CURRENT_USER for "User", using these instructions: Highlight HKEY_USERS and then select Load Hive from the Registry menu. Browse to their profile directory and select ntuser.dat or if you are editing a mandatory profile the file will be called ntuser.man When prompted for Key Name, input their Username. The editor will insert the user's Registry data into HKEY_USERS under the user's name. Make your changes to the registry located under this new key. After you are finished making all of the registry changes, highlight key corresponding to the username and select the Unload Hive option from the Registry menu. http://scilnet.fortlewis.edu/tech/Users/load_HKEY_USERS.htm But it failed: It says: "Can't load ntuser.dat.LOG: error while loading the hive". This file really exists and has 0 size. There is no User subtree under HKEY_USERS, so I presume, that Users hive is not loaded for Admin: Then I started from Live CD, and launched regedit there. I was able to load ntuser.dat correctly and delete the virus from autoload for User. How could I do it from Admin account?
