utility software.[1] Steps Method 1 Running the CHKDSK Utility 1 Access the CHKDSK utility. CHKDSK (or "check disk") is a built-in Windows utility that will scan and repair your drive's errors. It has the ability to find and repair a number of small errors or file corruptions that may be causing the cyclic redundancy error. Right click the drive you want to check, then click Properties->Tools. Under “Error Checking” click “Check Now”. If a CD or DVD disc is giving you this error it may be the result of a scratch or some dust. Try cleaning the disk with a soft cloth before anything else. Optical disk errors are often not repairable. If you get this error on a Mac (less common), first try the built-in Disk Utility and “Repair” the disk. 2 Decide on a basic versus an advanced scan. When I use the drive again, I got this cyclic redundancy error and windows suggest to format the drive. I can't do it now since I have many important files. I tried disk check but the drive is inaccessible (even in cmd prompt). Any suggestion please? If you ran it from within windows then boot to the command prompt and try CHKDSK before windows loads. Reply to almartin John_VanKirkJun 11, 2011, 9:03 PM Hello,Al's idea is cyclic redundancy check great. If you can run chkdsk, add the /f switch to fix any bad sector errors. When you are activeliy using a HDD, or manipulating files on it when you abruptly lose power, you may have corrupted the open file, or the file structure or partition of the HDD.To evaluate the HDD health, go to DiskMgmt and in the lower graphical section, list what it says in the Drive Status box, and in the Volume Status box just to the right. This will be your external removable HDD, listed possibly Disk1, or Disk 2 or 3 depending on how many fixed disks are on your Win-7 computer. Normally it should say Disk ?2, Basic, size_in_MB, Online. If it's a problem with the Disk organization, list those findings for us. Hello geeks. My Gateway DX4822 recently had the hard drive and the motherboard replaced by the manufacturer. Unfortunately the trouble was the power supply. When I attempted to restore the OS onto the computer using the recovery disks from Gateway, the power failed in the middle of the install. I had the power supply replaced after that, but now this is what I am experiencing due to the failed install. "BootMGR missing, press ctrl alt delete" (circumvented by pressing ctrl-alt-delete and booting from the System disk in my restore kit) 1% into the installation, I receive an error that says, restore failed error code 23 cyclic redundancy check. I contacted Gateway about this issue, and they told me that I needed to format my hard drive using a program called DiskFormatDT_V1-1D.iso. I burned this image onto a CD with my other computer. When I bring the program up on the Gateway, there is a drop-down menu for me to select a disk, but there are no options. The program reports as successful, but part of the DOS screen is showing and all I see is the word "selected". There is no other code, which suggests to me that no formatting took place. I believe it may be reporting an error such as "no disk selected" but I cannot see the rest of the screen to know for sure. After running this program (and a full scan of the hard drive which showed no errors), I attempted the installation again but it is still failing at the same place. My question to you geeks is, is there another way that I can format the hard drive, since this program doesn't seem to be recognizing the disk? Or is there a way to make it recognize the disk? Thank you very much for you help in advance. scooter Reports: · Posted 6 years ago Top whs Posts: 17584 This post has been reported. Use this one: ( http://www.partitionwizard.com.....nager.html ). Burn the bootable CD (see left pane on the website) and go from there. It is very easy to use. Reports: · Posted 6 years ago Top sc0oter Posts: 3 This post has been reported. Can you give more specific instructions? i don't know what option to choose once I run the program. I tried "formatting the partition" option but I am still getting the same install error afterwards.
