be addressed to avoid potential data loss or even a total system failure system. Luckily, there are a few simple ways to address this problem using (free) disk utility software.[1] Steps Method 1 Running the CHKDSK Utility 1 Access the CHKDSK utility. CHKDSK (or "check disk") is a built-in Windows utility that will scan and repair your drive's errors. It has the ability to find and repair a number of data error cyclic redundancy check raw small errors or file corruptions that may be causing the cyclic redundancy error. Right click the drive you want to check, then click Properties->Tools. Under “Error Checking” click “Check Now”. If a CD or DVD disc is giving you this error it may be the result of a scratch or some dust. Try cleaning the disk with a soft cloth before anything else. Optical disk errors are often not repairable. If you get this error on a Mac (less common), first try the built-in Disk Utility and “Repair” the disk. 2 Decide on a basic versus an advanced scan. Check boxes to indicate if you’d like to do a basic check and repair or an advanced one - the default is the basic scan. The basic scan should take around 15-20 minutes while the advanced scan may take hours. Make sure you’ve got the time set aside and don't disturb the computer once it begins. 3 Reboot the computer to begin the scan. If scanning the main drive on your computer (the one you’re booted up on), CHKDSK will not be able to run immediately and will instead schedule the scan for the next time you reboot the computer. You can continue use the computer as normal at this point

When I use http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50121.aspx the drive again, I got this cyclic redundancy error and windows suggest to format the drive. I can't do it now since I have many important files. I tried disk check but the data error drive is inaccessible (even in cmd prompt). Any suggestion please? When you are activeliy using a HDD, or manipulating files on it when you abruptly lose power, you may have corrupted the open file, or the file structure or partition of the HDD. To evaluate the HDD health, go to DiskMgmt and in the lower graphical section, list what it says in the Drive Status box, and in the Volume Status box just to the right. This will be your external removable HDD, listed possibly Disk1, or Disk 2 or 3 depending on how many fixed disks are on your Win-7 computer. Normally it should say Disk ?2, Basic, size_in_MB, Online. If it's a problem with the Disk organization, list those findings for us. A disk that has bad sectors is permanently damaged and, if the bad sectors were in use by the file system, it is very likely that the data contained in the damaged area is unrecoverable. This may be a sign that your hard drive is coming to the end of its life, though, it is still possible to manage the situation and create an Image whichcan be restored or used to mount and copy files and folders. For more information on bad sectors please see this Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_sector Detecting bad sectors If a bad sector is encountered during image creation then you will receive the following error in your backup log: Backup aborted! Unable to read from disk - Error Code 23 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check) Note: This is considered a fatal condition because your data cannot be read and the image will abort. The first step should be to run 'chkdsk' on the problem drive to reallocate file system clusters to undamaged disk sectors. Run chkdsk so bad sectors are not within the file system Run 'chkdsk c: /r' from a command prompt. Replace 'c:' with the appropriate drive letter. Note: The '/r' switch is important and will cause the entire file system to be checked for bad sectors. This will require a reboot to complete and may take some time. To open a command prompt: In Windows XP and Server 2003: Click 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Accessories' > 'Command Prompt'. In Vista/7/8 and Servers 2008/2011/2012 follow steps from a. (Note: if at START screen in Windows 8 start at b.) Press keyboard ‘Windows key’ Type word 'command' Then right-click on ‘Command Prompt’ From menu click 'Run as administrator' (in Windows 8, menu is at bottom of screen) Enter 'Y' if you receive the 'schedule this volume..' message. The above will map out any bad sectors in use b
