How can I get past this and backup my data? The cyclic redundancy check, or "CRC" error, indicates a bad spot on your hard drive. The factData Error Cyclic Redundancy Check When Installing A Game
that you're seeing it when you try to copy a file indicates that the bad spot may be within the file itself. We need to verify that and then we need to try to recovery your file and repair your hard drive. First, let's make sure that the problem is actually with the file you're copying since it's equally likely that the problem is with the location you're copying too. This is easy. Fire up a Command Prompt window, and data error cyclic redundancy check external hard drive seagate then copy the file to NUL: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:>CD (to wherever the file is located) C:wherever>copy Outlook.pst NUL 1 file(s) copied. This reads the entire file by copying it "nowhere". If this succeeds, the problem is not actually with the file itself, but the location you were trying to copy it to. My recommendation would be to copy it to a different disk entirely, or a different machine on your local network. If this copy fails, then we've confirmed that the bad sector on your hard disk is actually being used by some portion of your file. • Now that we've confirmed that the problem is in fact in the file itself, we need to make as best a copy of it as we can, somewhere else. This sets a position of "it can't get any worse than this". Some data within the file may be lost, but you'll have copied as much as possible before the recovery efforts. Once again, we want to copy the file to some different hard disk, or some other machine on your local network. And once again we need to do this within the command prompt: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:>CD (to wherever the file is located) C:wherever>xcopy /c Outlook.pst D: 1 file(s) copied. Two important things to note here: we've used the xcopy (for eXtended copy) command

The process works for about 30%, then i receive the error "Error during copy: Data error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)". I tried to "scandisk" the C: unit (at boot) but it doesn't show any data error problem. The chkdsk /f doesn't allow the scan as it says that another process is using the unit. Is there any way to fix this error? I already tried chkdsk /F /R and after a system restart the check has been done (it took more than 1 hour to complete). I read the result in the event viewer ->application->winlogon->properties and no error has been found (I don't post it here because it is in Italian): anyway, 256K in bad sectors have been reported. Maybethis is the reason of the CRC error: I don't know if there is any other way to bypass this error and make my vhd... A more detailed error message from disk2vhd would be apprecieted (i.e. the file on which the error was found) or the possibility to ignore the error and proceed anyway... Thanks again, Digilamer redhawk Members Profile Se

When I use the drive again, I got this cyclic redundancy error and windows suggest to format the drive. I can't do it now since I have many important files. I tried disk check but the drive is inaccessible (even in cmd prompt). Any suggestion please? If you ran it from within windows then boot to the command prompt and try CHKDSK before windows loads. Reply to almartin m 0 l John_VanKirk a c 106 G Storage 12 June 2011 02:03:18 Hello, Al's idea is great. If you can run chkdsk, add the /f switch to fix any bad sector errors. When you are activeliy using a HDD, or manipulating files on it when you abruptly lose power, you may have corrupted the open file, or the file structure or partition of the HDD. To evaluate the HDD health, go to DiskMgmt and in the lower graphical section, list what it says in the Drive Status box, and in the Volume Status box just to the right. This will be your external removable HDD, listed possibly Disk1, or Disk 2 or 3 depending on how many fixed disks are on your Win-7 computer. Normally it should say Disk ?2, Basic, size_in_MB, Online. If it's a problem with the Disk organization, list those findings for us. Reply to John_VanKirk m 0 l Related resources Cyclic re
