Regardless of the specific cause, the cyclic redundancy check error is a serious one and must be data error cyclic redundancy check external hard drive raw addressed to avoid potential data loss or even a total system failure system. Luckily, there are a few simple ways to address this problem using (free) disk utility software.[1] Steps Method 1 Running the CHKDSK Utility 1 Access the CHKDSK utility. CHKDSK (or "check disk") is a built-in Windows utility that will scan and repair your drive's errors. It has the ability to find and repair a number of small errors data error cyclic redundancy check dvd or file corruptions that may be causing the cyclic redundancy error. Right click the drive you want to check, then click Properties->Tools. Under “Error Checking” click “Check Now”. If a CD or DVD disc is giving you this error it may be the result of a scratch or some dust. Try cleaning the disk with a soft cloth before anything else. Optical disk errors are often not repairable. If you get this error on a Mac (less common), first try the built-in Disk Utility and “Repair” the disk. 2 Decide on a basic versus an advanced scan. Check boxes to indicate if you’d like to do a basic check and repair or an advanced one - the default is the basic scan. The basic scan should take around 15-20 minutes while the advanced scan may take hours. Make sure you’ve got the time set aside and don't disturb the computer once it begins. 3 Reboot the computer to begin the scan. If scanning the main drive on your computer (the one you’re booted up on), CHKDSK will not be able to run immediately and will instead schedule the scan for the next time you reboot the computer. You can continue use the computer as normal at this point - restart when

I tried all tips given on the issue, but in vain. But in the end I came up with my own solution. I borrowed my friend's laptop and used it to format my own HDD, which is by the way Toshiba. I logged it and erased all partitions. Since crc issues lurk at the very begging parts of the hard drive, I discarded 10Go from my hard drive to prevent any dysfunction and hidden that 10Go from appearing. Then, I partitioned the rest to C: and D:. I granted primary partition to both C: and D:. And that did the tr

You may well have more than just CRC errors as they usually only come up on a bad drive. Contrary to what others say, CRC errors are unrecoverable. They are usually seen as a result of the internal logic of the drive giving different data for the same sectors and the check noticing this and throwing up an error. Western Digital and Seagate both have software that can and will low level format your drive if it needs it. As long as you don't have a failed or failing drive, you should

Let the geek-speak begin. --- I thought our 500 GB Iomega Hard Drive had crashed. This is a hard drive which was sent to us by my brother and sister-in-law (when we were in New Zealand in 2010). Since that time, this 500 GB hard drive become filled with tens of thousands of pictures, videos we've created from our various travels, and a whole bunch of marketing related stuff for our online work. I thought the drive was done for (i.e. crashed forever) tonight. However, after LOTS of reading 2 hours of kicking things around in frustration (only sort of kidding) and a random suggestion within DOS I got this drive repaired and the data back. WHOO-HOO! This post is for anyone else who might be experiencing the same Cyclic Redundancy Check Here's what I did to fix the Data Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check Start -> opened a command prompt (I typed CMD into the search feature in Windows 7, but depending on your version of Windows, you'll have to look up how to do this.) Got the desired DOS black screen with c:UsersJonathan I ran checkdisk on the drive. I did that by typing chkdsk g: So the whole line looked like this: C:UsersJonathan>chkdsk g: (Your drive may have a different letter). Running checkdisk took a few minutes to check the disk. Then I read through the results of the checkdisk. This message was in there. "The volume Bitmap is incorrect. Windows found problems with the file system. Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these." So, I ran this: C:UsersJonathan>chkdsk g: /F It took a few minutes, but the drive came back up, and I now no longer have the "Cyclic Redundancy Check" error message. Here's a screenshot of the DOS prompts. I can access all of the files on my Iomega Drive. And I've now moved the files onto a different drive (just in case). H
