Any suggestions would be gratefully received. There is a single flag in the header of the data file that is a Boolean value (True or False). While you use Outlook the value of this flag is constantly changing as communicator 2007 update package the data file is updated. When the update begins the value is changed to False and then when the update completes the value is changed back to True (implying the update is finished and successful). So, the key to the problem is the shut down process because once the Outlook.exe process is exited this flag value cannot be changed. If the Outlook.exe process was terminated prematurely or a 3rd party add-in did not properly set the flag value to True then the flag value can be left at False. If you start Outlook with a data file where the value of the flag is False you are guaranteed to see the “data file” check. If the value of the flag is True then you will not see the “data file” check. Right now, there are a few known common causes for this issue: - Shutting down Windows before the Outlook.exe process has exited - 3rd party add-ins improperly “closing” the data file - Outlook crashing - Non-Outlook process accessing the data file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954642/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948733/en-us Regarding the post advised by Rod, I would like to explain more detailed: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When you shut down Outlook, the Outlook window goes away, but the

machine thus far, by the way!). It came preloaded with applications, as vendors tended to do until Dell (in early July) announced its Vostro line, which enables you to "opt out" of all that garbage. Anyway, the D830 https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/405a0aab-9299-46bd-91ea-b1189828733d/outlook-2007-data-file-not-closed-properly?forum=exchangesvrclientslegacy came preloaded with applications (all of which I like) including Google Desktop, which I'd not used since upgrading to Vista Beta 1 with the integrated Windows Desktop Search. I installed OUTLOOK 2007 (and the rest of Office 2007) on my laptop and immediately began getting error messages on Outlook startup: "Microsoft Office Outlook; A data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is being checked for problems. Performance might be affected http://sharepointpromag.com/blog/troubleshooting-outlook-error-quota-data-file-did-not-close-properlyquot while the check is in progress." It happened every time, or almost every time, I started Outlook. I was concerned about possible corruption to my mail, of course, so I began troubleshooting. I've fixed these errors before, but this experience reminded me that it would be worth documenting for you, the Microsoft Office community. So here's the bottom line: GOOGLE DESKTOP OUTLOOK TOOLBAR (GDOT). Disabling it, restarting Outlook (several times) and re-enabling it fixed it. Here are the details: IT IS ALMOST ALWAYS GOING TO BE AN ADD-IN THAT GIVES YOU THIS PROBLEM As you close Outlook, add-ins don't always gracefully "let go" of the data files. The first step in troubleshooting this error is make sure OUTLOOK itself is closing properly. If it's not, then Outlook is the culprit. Open Outlook then open Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) and click the PROCESSES tab. Look for outlook.exe. Exit Outlook and watch that the process does, in fact, disappear. Then re-open Outlook. Do you get the "Data file" error? If you get the error, and outlook DID close completely, that's a sign that it's likely an addin. Next, open Outlook 2007 and go to Addins: Choose Tools > Trust Center In the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, choose COM Addins and click the Go button. Test your add-ins one at a time (I recommend GDO

I am in the process of resolving this issue as stated in the title that the user did not come across until recently when Outlook had locked up on him and he was forced to improperly close it down. The problem im coming across data file is that everytime he starts outlook it takes the system around 45 minutes just to analyze the data file all the while not being able to do anything at all in Outlook. The long loadup time I understand because he has an amazing 81,000 emails. The problem arises after the check is finally completed, Outlook opens and as soon as I attempt to erase files immediately, he begins receiving the emails that he has missed out on for was not closed the past week which is around 150 MB. This in turn causes Outlook to lockup for some unknown reason and became a vicious cycle. We then opened up outlook in safe mode and deleted about 60,000 emails, then reopened outlook and managed to receive a few days of missed emails. During this process it locked up again and we are back at step one and waiting for it to analyze the data file which is actually taking longer than previously stated when the file was much larger. Any suggestions would be great, I've done a lot of searching around and couldn't find an answer I found sufficient to my own personal problem. I have always had success asking you guys here so thanks ahead of time for anything that you can contribute.
