I made a bootable USB using Universal USB. Booted off the USB and selected "Graphical Install", I had an issue at the beginning with the install prompting that it cannot find the data in the CDROM, I pulled the USB and waited 30 seconds, plugged kali linux - debootstrap error failed to determine codename for the release it in waited 30 seconds then plugged it in and it allowed me to continue through the install. I enabled LVM and went through that whole process once it was done it went to the next step which is "Install the system" at this point I get the error Debootstrap Error Failed to determine the codename for the release At this point I cannot go further in the installation. I went back to the "Debian installer menu" and executed a shell. With that shell I tried to mount the USB to /cdrom using "mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /cdrom" which I found on a Debian forum. I receive the following error "mounting /dev/sdb1 on /cdrom failed: no such file or directory" I then try to mkdir CDROM, but it states it already exists. sdb1 is my USB according to "mount" I am not sure what to do at this point. Any advice would be great. Thanks. linux debian mount kali-linux share|improve this question asked Jan 25 at 3:15 tmi 1114 add a comment| active oldest votes You must log in to answer this question. I tried installing Ubunut 8.10 from Alternate CD. After RAID setup i got debootstrap error: Failed to determine codename for release So, the solution to this was to open another terminal (F2) and re-mount cdrom, as it's device name has been changed. #mount (see what's device name for current /cdrom) (i had /dev/scd0 mounted on /cdrom) #umount /cdrom #mount /dev/scd[TAB] /cdrom (enter your device name without number, from previous output of mount, and TAB autocompletes it with correct number) Then just return to installer (F1), return to install options menu and choose "Rescan CDROM" Adv Reply January 7th, 2009 #2 lenzj View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message First Cup of Ubuntu Join Date Feb 2008 Beans 1 Re: Failed to determine codename for release That worked for me as well. It must be a bug unique to raid installs. Thanks for the post! I also had /dev/scd0 mounted to cdrom. It failed to remount, but going back to the installation menu, physically opening and closing the cdrom drawer (so it would attempt to read the volume) and rescanning the cdrom did the trick.
