Debootstrap error I'm installing Desktop 10.04 with debootstrap error failed to determine the codename for the release the Alternate CD, due to a RAID1 requirement. Things go fine until the base system is being installed--just after the partitioning. Then I get a lot of Debootstrap warnings that file://cdrom/pool/main/... was corrupt, then "Warning: Couldn't download package ..." There must have been a hundred or more packages that wouldn't load. This is my third try, with two different verified-for-integrity multiple-times CDs. The second and third try I checked both CDs for integrity prior to the installation attempt. (I switched to another CD after the second failure). Results were the same for all three attempts. The partitioning has a RAID1 and several ext4 and ext2 partitions as well as a swap partition on each of the two drives. Is ext4 solid? I've had previous troubles with trying to install this machine, but this is earlier in the process. (Previous trouble was the system's not finding /boot/grub and dumping me to a grub-rescue> prompt. I didn't follow up on the rescue because I couldn't find the /boot partition. Turned out the grub directory was in /. /boot was missing--maybe because I put it at the end of the drive during the install?). It happens when the user is trying to perform an installation without a working cdrom. In my case, I mounted another partition containing the xubuntu iso, and then used the loop device to mount that iso as /cdrom Mounting /cdrom one's self appears to omit some critical step; apparently the release codename is decided when the cdrom is mounted by the installer. Installation hits a brick wall at the "Install Base System" step because of the fatal "Failed to determine codename for the release" error. ljp37 (finite-automaton) wrote on 2007-07-01: #3 I think I've found a workaround for this. After you mount another partition or an ISO to /cdrom, get to

I already have Ubuntu/win7 dual boot. When I start installing Kali Linux everything goes right, choosing language, root's pass word ..., but after the system finished coping "system's files" I got a weird black screen saying system is going for halt (or something like that I can't remember well because it was too short). After that I lost the grub, I got an error saying "File Not Found grub-rescue >". I retried but the same problem came up, so I installed Ubuntu again and everything is fine right now. I would like to know the reason why I cant have Kali Linux on my hard drive though it works awesome in live mode. P.S I disabled wireless card from BIOS menu because the installation stops at detecting network interfaces step. kali-linux share|improve this question edited Sep 20 '14 at 5:25 Anthon 47.4k1462125 asked Sep 20 '14 at 0:18 Younes 2315 Please provide some more information on GRUB installation in Ubuntu and Kali. –sshilovsky Sep 20 '14 at 8:05 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted You could also use debootstrap to install Kali directly from Ubuntu.
