I'm a little late to the party...but I just got a PS2 for $20 at a thrift store, and was disappointed to see the Disc Read Error when I tried to play a game. DVDs and CDs got the same error. I followed the instructions here, and turning the little white gear worked!
I marked the gear's current position with a Sharpie, and turned the gear by "clicks". The gear clicks when turned, so I turned it 3 clicks, tested, didn't work. Turned another 3 clicks, tested, etc. Took a few tries, but eventually it started reading discs!

Well first off before you go on crazy rampage and crack it open or buy a new ps2 do http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix-the-PS2-Disk-Read-Error/ 3 simple things:Most of the time this problem is due to dirty disk, it is amazing that some disk can work perfectly with thousands of scratches and smudges, but somthing as little as a finger print or some dust can bring up that awful disk error. *some tips on cleaning disk* - first of all use a clean cloth(duh  )preferably a disk cleaning cloth. -clean from the inside out instraight lines. -be carful what you http://www.gamespot.com/forums/games-discussion-1000000/playstation-2-disk-read-error-solutions-23572005/ clean with best stick to retail cleaners for cds (i use windex but its not recomended) -the most important thing is to clean softly do not rub because you can kind of wax the cd if you rub too hard. -the safest path is just to go buy a cd cleaner at walmart If that does not work then a simple solution is to turn the PlayStation on its left side. Trust me i know it sounds stupid but it works wonders:P. *make sure you have it prorerly suported the last thing you need is your ps2 to take a dive of the game table.*If those 2 dont work then you could try cleaning you lens by using a cleaning disk like this oneAnother solution is to open you disk tray then turn it off and spray the heck out of the tray and the slot in the ps2. (complements to jekkie) *Some times the compresed air cans will shoot out water (ice too if turn it upside down :P ) so keep your ps2 turned off:) if this does happen just leave it off for about 48 hours and air it out with a fan or a hair dryer on cold on it)*Ok one more thing before you try opening ti up you can call sony and have them fix it. If your warranty is ex
6 Comments Filed Under: Gaming Tagged: ps2 Last night me and my girlfriend were going to face off in Guitar Hero. However, my PS2 just froze while trying to read the disc. After about 4 minutes it http://www.technipages.com/ps2-fix-disc-read-error said Disc Read Error. It had been getting this way for a while. It would take forever to read the game disc and it would sometimes sit forever at the Browser/System Configuration screen. The unit is 8 https://mattread.com/ps2-disc-read-error-fix years old so I would imagine some filth has built up on the disc reading laser lens inside of it. I decided to clean it out to fix this problem. Here's how it's done: Supplies: Cotton swab disc read Small (micro) Phillips head screwdriver Standard Phillips head screwdriver Flat head screwdriver Canned air (optional) 1. Remove all peripherals from the Playstation 2. Discs, memory cards, controllers and modems. 2. Flip the unit on it's top. 4 rubber feet and 4 square plastic coverings need to be removed from the bottom of the unit. 3. Remove the coverings using a flat head screwdriver. Then remove all of the screws using the standard Phillips disc read error screwdriver. 4. Flip the PS2 back on it's right side. Remove the cover carefully, angling it down toward the front of the unit and flipping it over. Careful, there is a ribbon cable attached on the front side. 5. After the cover is removed, the top of the disc drive is revealed. The top of it must be removed with a small screw driver. Remove the 4 screws to it. 6. Carefully remove the top to the disc drive, and the inside is exposed along with the disc reading lens. 7. Using a damp cotton swab, gently clean the disc reading laser lens. 8. To finish things off you may want to use some canned air to clean out other parts inside of the unit. Put the PS2 back together and it will read discs just like it did when you first purchased it. disc read error that sometimes happens to older PS2's. I've had good results, and so have many others. Let me know how it goes for you This guide will walk you through the process of repairing a malfunctioning Playstation 2 or one that gives you Disc Read Errors (called "DRE" from here on). I have tested this process on two Playstation 2s now and it completely fixed the errors both were experiencing. The model # was SCPH-30001 on both units, but the process should be the same for others. You can read the entire article over at Tweek3D.net.
