I'm a little late to the party...but I just got a PS2 for $20 at a thrift store, and was disappointed to see the Disc Read Error when I tried to play a game. DVDs and CDs got the same error. I followed the instructions here, and turning the little white gear worked!
I marked the gear's current position with a Sharpie, and turned the gear by "clicks".

Well first off before you go on crazy rampage and crack it open or buy a new ps2 do 3 simple things:Most of the time this problem is due to dirty disk, it is amazing that some disk can work perfectly http://www.gamespot.com/forums/games-discussion-1000000/playstation-2-disk-read-error-solutions-23572005/ with thousands of scratches and smudges, but somthing as little as a finger print or some dust can bring up that awful disk error. *some tips on cleaning disk* - first of all use a clean cloth(duh  )preferably a disk cleaning cloth. -clean from the inside out instraight lines. -be carful what you clean with best stick to retail cleaners for cds (i use windex but its not recomended) -the most important thing is to clean softly do not rub because you can kind of wax the cd if you rub too hard. -the safest path is just to go buy a cd cleaner at walmart If that does not work then a simple solution is to turn the PlayStation on its left side. Trust me i know it sounds stupid but it works wonders:P. *make sure you have it prorerly suported the last thing you need is your ps2 to take a dive of the game table.*If those 2 dont work then you could try cleaning you lens by

Rob Nelson - Nov 10, 2003 2:20 am UTC reader comments 4 Share this story Ever gotten those annoying Disc disc read Read Error messages on your Playstation 2? If you have, I'll bet the first time you saw one was on the 31st day you've had it, after the Sony 30-day warranty expired. If you're real lucky, your PS2 might last two or even three years; eventually this error will hunt down your PS2 and settle down there. If it only affects you some of the time ? you might be able to disc read error play some DVD movies, but your favorite one never loads, or you can only play PSone games and not silver-colored PS2 games ? then chances are it's not a serious error and only requires minor adjustments to your PS2. Since it is out of warranty, there's little risk in opening it up and trying to fix it yourself before paying to send it back to Sony's repair center. The following guide shows you how to get the PS2 open, clean it out, make your adjustments, and put it back together without any hassles. Before we begin, I'd just like to say that if your PS2 is under warranty, get this taken care of by Sony. It's not worth voiding your warranty if you can survive without it for a week or so. If your PS2 can't read anything at all, cross your fingers and read on, but you may have a more serious issue than we can fix. I am using a model SCPH-30001 Playstation 2, with a U serial number. Newer models have different heatsinks and even a different chip layout on the motherboard. Some instructions may vary or not apply for other models. My apologies to modem users, but I'm going to throw in a lot of pictures. You'll fi

There are a number of causes for this problem and a number of fixes: Clean the disc: Dust or smudges from fingerprints can cause disc reading problems. For the tech savvy, you may remove the disc drive, and gently clean the assembly with a cleaning cloth. For a less intrusive approach, use a can of compressed air, and attempt to blow the dust out from the vents and the disc tray, though this may also cause dust to settle
