disk, it is amazing that some disk can work perfectly with thousands of scratches and smudges, but somthing as little as a finger print or some dust can bring up that awful disk error. *some tips on cleaning disk* - first of all use a clean cloth(duh  )preferably a disk cleaning cloth. -clean from the inside out instraight lines. -be carful what you clean with best stick to retail cleaners for cds (i use windex but its not recomended) -the most important ps2 disc read error fix without opening thing is to clean softly do not rub because you can kind of wax the cd if you rub too hard. -the safest path is just to go buy a cd cleaner at walmart If that does not work then a simple solution is to turn the PlayStation on its left side. Trust me i know it sounds stupid but it works wonders:P. *make sure you have it prorerly suported the last thing you need is your ps2 to take a dive of the game table.*If those 2 dont work then you could try cleaning you lens by using a cleaning disk like this oneAnother solution is to open you disk tray then turn it off and spray the heck out of the tray and the slot in the ps2. (complements to jekkie) *Some times the compresed air cans will shoot out water (ice too if turn it upside down :P ) so keep your ps2 turned off:) if this does happen just leave it off for about 48 hours and air it out with a fan or a hair dryer on cold on it)*Ok one more thing before you try opening ti up you can call sony and have them fix it. If your warranty is expired, Sony will not fix it for free (they did for a short time, but not anymore) - $45 to fix it or $75 for a refurbished PS2. Phone # for sony: 1-800-345-sony(complements to wackoss)Now hopfuly that fi

Anyway the DRE only affects DVD's, Cd's load up very fast. Anyway here http://psx-scene.com/forums/f110/disc-read-error-help-scph-5001-a-45479/ is what I did, called Sony to see if they would fix it, still had warranty sticker attached, they said NO. I then opened up the console and cleaned it out, wasn't very dirty to begin with. Cleaned the lens with Q-tip and alcohol, didn't work. I was thinking about adjusting the laser angle but this model has 2 white cogs so I didn't really mess with it. If someone can tell me which cog to try that would help! I then proceeded to the pots to adjust the voltage, pot for dvd was set at 1.3 kohms and I went in increments of 100, went from .758 to 1.517 kohms, 8 different adjustments and nothing. And in a final ditch effort tried 1.95 kohms nothing. I got tired after this and stopped, if someone can give me some advice to try I would appreciate it. I'm not sure why it stopped working, he didn't say. But when looking around I noticed the tray is cracked, this leads me to believe it may have been dropped. Also the laser model is khs-400c. Unfortunately, when I inserted the disc into my ps2, I'm getting a 'disc read error' response. I have a SCPH 5002, PAL, with a modchip. I disc read error have narrowed it down to either a v9 or a v10. Region code is oceanic (It was bought in Australia.). I have attempted re-creating my FMCB boot disc several times now but despite going through a dozen iso's and re-burns, i'm still getting the "Disc Read Error" response. See below for more details. Thank you for reading my post. Any help/advice into this frustrating matter will be greatly appreciated. *boring details* 1. Burn Process The FMCB bootdisc iso's were burnt using a program called PowerISO. Thinking that my burner program was at fault, I tried out a different burner called imgburn. All burns were conducted at 1x speed. All my iso's were burnt onto a CD-RW and a DVD-RW, with both being tested. 2. FMCB Compilation After the first few failed attempts, I decided to inspect each and every file before recompiling it again just for the sake of repeating the entire process. While inspecting each file, I was lucky to have spotted a tiny syntax (perhaps) error in my SYSTEM.CNF file. Instead of "BOOT2 = cdrom0:\FREE_MCBOOT.ELF;1 VER = 1.00 VMODE = NTSC/PAL" I found "BOOT2 = cdrom0:\FREE_MCBOOT.ELF;1 VER = 1.00 VMODE = NTSCPAL" Notice the difference? the / is missing from "VMODE = NTSC/PAL". I don't know what happened there as I pasted that
