I'm going to be as thorough as possible. 2006 Dell desktop, Windows XP with SP3 and all subsequent MS updates that the system automatically downloads and installs. System was running normally until about a month ago. It froze, and the only choice was to reboot via the power button. When it tried to boot, it paused and eventually coughed up the infamous "missing or corrupt hal.dll" message. AFAIK, I had made no changes to the system; I think it may have occurred right after the latest round of updates from MS, but I'm not certain. Ran a couple of different virus scanners, nothing found. And since this hadn't been mentioned I thought i'd throw this up here for those who still can't get it to work.the MFPlat.dll error occurs when you haven't for a certain Media Feature pack for your windows version, most notably Windows N versions do not have this pack installed (I'm on Windows 7 N). It had run fine for a while, and one day it simply wouldn't start anymore. Reinstalling the game and restarting Steam/my computer doesn't help anything.
