Error message in KERNEL32.dll Synopsis: Under Win98 (1st ed) suddenly saw a message that said "Explorer has caused an error in Kernel32.dll" After that, everytime I tried to click on a program ICON, the same message occurred. Then on shutdown and startup and other places, the message appeared - but it would have a different dll error program name (Taskmon, Rundll32, etc) causing the problem though the error was always in KERNEL32.dll. WHICH FILE IS CAUSING THE ERROR?? (If you need more info, read on...) ================================= CONFIGURATION: Pentium III 600 Mhz, 256K RAM, 30 GB, dual ethernet adaptors (one for home network, one for DSL internet), Windows 98 1st edition, hundreds of installed programs. PROBLEM: Out of the clear blue, while surfing the web (AOL 6.0 on DSL), noted a kernel32.dll error windows message "Explorer has caused an error in Kernel32.dll." I pressed "CLOSE" and it went away - for awhile. Error reappeared every 3 or 4 minutes but seemed harmless. When I closed AOL and tried to go into another program, same message appeared but now I could not start the other program. Tried several othes, some would work, most would not. Tried to do a shutdown, noted that error message appeared but the shutdown program caused the error, but still it was in KERNEL32.dll. ATTEMPT 1: I figured that KERNEL32.dll was the problem. I copied the file from my Windows CD to the windows\system directory thinking that would solve the problem. It did not. I copied other files (explorer, Win.com, etc) - nothing helped. ATTEMPT 2: I then tried an experiment. I loaded a new copy of Windows 98 SE into a directory called Windows.000. When I booted that copy of windows, the error disappeared. Of course, nothing else would work because I had no registry and no drivers (see note 1, below). I switched back (by renaming the MSDOS.SYS file) and booted the original Windows and the error was still there. I ran my Norton anti-virus and it did not detect a virus. I also ran scandisk and except for one file with an illegal filename
