Thankfully you can use the free Google DNS servers, which are much more stable than the ones used by many broadband suppliers. There are other free DNS servers you might want to use, instead. Read our guide on how to find a better DNS server. To avoid unwanted DNS issues in the future, we've put together a complete guide on how to change your DNS servers, either through http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/networks/1400420/how-to-fix-bt-dns-issues-using-google-dns your home Wi-Fi router, on each device in the house, or through a NAS device. Using static IP addresses All wireless routers have built-in DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) servers. When a new device connects to them, they automatically dish out IP addresses and DNS server information. This is handy, as it saves a lot of time and effort, making networking easy. However, using this method, devices only lease an address; when the lease is up, they may end up using a new, different address. That's no good for some devices, so to follow this article, you may need to configure some to use a static address, setting it manually. We'll explain how, but before you do anything else you need to find out how to find out a safe address by connecting to your router. Every router manufacturer does things slightly differently, but our directions should make sense regardless of which router you're using. First off, open the configuration page: this is typically done by typing http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 into your web browser, but if you aren't sure you can find out by typing "ipconfig" into a Windows command prompt, or "route -n" in a Mac Terminal Window. In both cases, the default gateway address is the IP address of your router, which you should enter into your browser's address bar. Enter your username and password to login. Look for the DHCP server settings. These will tell yo

A blue screen with message that I was accessing websites outside of BT's dns server ( not too sure of exact words now) appeared. Yes but at the bottom of the page a link of how to fix it led me to control panel and to check if ip and dns servers are automatically selected. This I checked and they were correctly set.So why and what is the fix for me? All 3 browsers, IE, FF aand Chrome all affected. I 'switched off' BT protect but eventually (an hour or so) I discovered that I had to clear all browsing history on all 3 browsers before I could successfully return to normal. I don't think I shall use BT Protect on this evidence.Any advice would be appreciated before I report to BT. Cynical Solved! Go to Solution. I've always used Open DNS since becoming a BT Infinity customer over 2 years ago. No problems until yesterday. A blue error page appeared whenever I tried to open any web page (other than BT.com and gmail) stating that BT Parental controls had blocked access, and that I was maybe using the wrong DNS server. I logged into my account. BT Parental controls weren't activated. I followed the procedures to both install BT's DNS server coordinates on to my mac (OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite) and to delete BT Parental controls entirely. (I don't need them). I then shut down the mac for an hour. My iPad and phone on the same network were working just fine during this blue screen BT impasse. Needless to say BT's live chat was down as well. All worked fine after that until this morning, when certain websites are blocked yet again by (you've guessed it) blue screen DNS server/BT Parental controls. Logged back in and it's still deleted. As an example of what it's blocking, www.independent.co.uk is one. I've emailed BT's 'website incorrectly blocked' email but I'm aware of the horror of their CS so I'm wondering what to do. I can't find any suggestions on forums other than clearing the browsing cache and deleting Parental controls, both of which I've done. Edit: just had an email. They've outsourced Parental controls. My guess is the problems I'm having are a software issue with whoever this is? This is the pro forma I got back. No way to explain I've deleted their malfunctioning controls!
