Byneed_help Dec 13, 2005 https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/no-internet-access-after-win98se-re-install-dns-error-222693/ I have a windows 98 machine I'm working on and no programs can connect to anything on the internet. I can ping out to the internet, but I can't ping like www.yahoo.com. So I'm guessing it's a DNS problem. This machine had lots of viruses/trojans/spyware on it when it came in. I have removed them all. I have reinstalled win98 (over itself). http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/dns-problem-on-windows-98-machine.39336/ I have done SFC and it replaced user.exe. At first I was getting socket errors, so I did the win98 winsock fix and now I'm getting "Unable to resolve host" on somes apps (such as the update portion of spybot). IE always gives me page cannot be displayed. Yahoo messenger doesn't even look like its trying to connect, just comes back immediatly with whatever error message. It's on a lan and every other machine is working fine with the same settings. I have also tried putting in the correct DNS addresses. I have forced all the settings (ip/dns/gateway) and still same thing. I have looked up what .dlls are used for DNS and replaced those using SFC. Is this possibly a NIC problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Dec 13, 2005 #1 Vigilante TechSpot Paladin Posts: 1,666 Have you used an LSP fix program for 9x? Check out http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html for a 9x based fixer. Did you make sure there is no proxy? IE-Tools-Options-Connections-LAN Settings. If so, remove it (uncheck boxes). Any software firewall present? Try disabling or uninstalling

I get the following error: "The http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/troub-131.html page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings." Then the usual "please try the following," dns error of which none help. Then, at the bottom: "Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer" ----- These are the only two sites in the last month that have not worked for me, and I did not install/un-installed anything between the time I could access the site and when I couldn't. I have visited many support websites over the past few weeks, and have tried many different things and many settings, of which none dns error window have worked. I have changed the security settings back and forth and I've changed all the Internet Options around, but that didn't work. I changed all the settings back to the defaults, but that didn't work, either. I've also tried multiple browsers, but again, that didn't work. Tried switching off the firewall, didn't work. I have e-mailed by ISP (Comcast) a couple times, but they have not solved my problem. They told me to ping and tracert the sites, and then send them the results -- which I did --, but they never responded. I then e-mailed them again after a week, they apologized, but still didn't answer my problem. Calling them in the past has been even less helpful. If it helps ...
