Byneed_help Dec 13, 2005 I have a windows 98 machine I'm working on and no programs can connect to anything on the internet. I can ping out to the internet, but I can't ping like www.yahoo.com. So I'm guessing it's a DNS problem. This machine had lots of viruses/trojans/spyware on it when http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/dns-problem-on-windows-98-machine.39336/ it came in. I have removed them all. I have reinstalled win98 (over itself). I have done SFC and it replaced user.exe. At first I was getting socket errors, so I did the win98 winsock fix and now I'm getting "Unable to resolve host" on somes apps (such as the update portion of spybot). IE always gives me page cannot be displayed. Yahoo messenger doesn't even look like its trying to connect, just comes back immediatly with whatever error message. It's on a lan and every other machine is working fine with the same settings. I have also tried putting in the correct DNS addresses. I have forced all the settings (ip/dns/gateway) and still same thing. I have looked up what .dlls are used for DNS and replaced those using SFC. Is this possibly a NIC problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Dec 13, 2005 #1 Vigilante TechSpot Paladin Posts: 1,666 Have you used an LSP fix program for 9x? I had to remove and reinstall the networking components from the machine, and recreated the dial up connection. It dials in, but at the "Logging on to the network" part it takes a full minute before the windows user login screen pops up (one user, I don't have the password, I just hit escape dns error at boot to bypass) so I hit cancel and it finishes the dial up login. Internet Explorer version 6 sp1 will not load websites. I've been contacting the isp, but the two solutions so far (disabling all firewalls, manually specifying DNS) haven't worked. Here's another odd thing. Shortly after signing into the isp, a code script error pops up for what seems to be McAffee registration wizard. I stop running all the scripts and it causes no problems. I've tried running other scripts, dns error windows nothing different happens. Either way, I still cannot load webpages. My friend says he can ping www.google.com by IP address, but we cannot browse to it by either IP or URL... No proxy settings, no firewalls... fresh IE install. Can anyone help me? It's a tough question because I have no idea what started it, or what other people have done to try and fix it! metallicat_pip View Public Profile Find all posts by metallicat_pip #2 August 4th, 2005, 08:33 PM Miz Cyber Tech Help Moderator Join Date: Mar 2003 O/S: Windows 10 Home Location: Kansas Age: 70 Posts: 11,997 In Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections tab>Setup button, run through that wizard and specify the dialup modem connection as the one to use. It sounds somewhat like IE is looking to the network card for its internet access rather than the dialup modem. I have it set to never dial a connection, as the only time the owner would want to be on the internet, she's used to dialing her isp manually via a shortcut on the desktop. Would this make a difference? I've ensure that TCP/IP was bound to the modem, and still can't get it to work. In MS-DOS prompt, ping www.google.com returns Unknown
