spatial database extender for the PostgreSQL Database Management System. In a postgis.control": no such file or directory nutshell it adds spatial functions such as distance, area, union, intersection, and specialty geometry data types to the create extension postgis database. PostGIS is very similar in functionality to SQL Server 2008 Spatial support, ESRI ArcSDE, Oracle Spatial, and DB2 spatial extender. The latest release version now comes packaged with

the PostgreSQL DBMS installs as an optional add-on. As of this writing PostGIS 1.5.0 is the latest stable release. NOTE: The windows stack builder installer now comes packaged with a Graphical User Interface version of ESRI Shapefile Loader that can be enabled as a PgAdmin III plugin. We will assume a windows environment for this tutorial, but most of the tutorial will apply to other supported platforms such as Linux, Unix, BSD, Mac etc. We will also be using Massachusetts/Boston data for these examples. For desktop users, the EnterpriseDB one-click installer exists as well for Mac/OSX and Linux desktops, so you should be able to follow along without too much fuss. Installing PostgreSQL with PostGIS Functionality We will not go into too much detail here since the install wizard (at least the windows one) is pretty good. Below are the basic steps. Note for Vista Users Because of the new added security in Vista, you may run into issues installing PostgreSQL. Please refer to the Windows Vista gotchas http://trac.osgeo.org/postgis/wiki/UsersWikiWinVista in the PostGIS wiki if you run into issues.
Download the install for your specific platform from the PostgreSQL Binary Download ( http://www.postgresql.org/download/ ) . As of this writing the latest version is PostgreSQL 8.4.2 and we will be assuming PostGIS 1.5. The below options follow the basic sequence of the postgresql windows installer. Which meant I needed to download and install TileMill, an interactive map design tool. Which meant I needed to learn Carto, the CSS-like language for map styling. Which meant I looked for a template project so I didn't have to start from scratch. Which meant I found OSM Bright. Which meant I needed to start small and find a map extract of Tanzania to work with. Which meant I needed to install and configure PostgreSQL http://www.vicchi.org/2012/12/23/making-postgresql-postgis-and-a-mac-play-nicely-together/ and PostGIS on my Mac. Which brings me to the starting point of the journey and the reason for this post in the first place. When I normally need to install UNIX-y command line and server tools I turn to Homebrew, the tool set that "installs the stuff you need that Apple didn't". Homebrew supports installing both PostgreSQL and PostGIS but a bit of background research showed that installing these on Lion and on Mountain Lion could be problematic. A bit of further research soon turned up Postgres.app, which claims to be "the easiest way to run PostgreSQL on the Mac". Postgres.app is a single shot installer which wraps PostgreSQL and PostGIS into an easy to install and run self contained environment. I'm a big fan of this approach to a software development environment. All of the stuff I've put up on GitHub and on WordPress.org has been written using MAMP, the single shot installer which wraps up Apache, MySQL and PHP on the Mac so Postgres.app gave instant appeal to me. So, download, install, start. Next I found an OSM map extract of Tanzania courtesy of GeoFabrik, which I also downloaded. Now to load the map into PostgreSQL. I made sure my shell's PATH pointed to the command line tools provided by Postgres.app by prepending /Applications/Postgres.app/Contents/MacOS/bin to the PATH defined in my .bash_profile, ran psql and created a databa

I just installed POSTGRESQL, and PostGIS. The GUI looks like this: After testing that my database worked, I chose the shapefile that I wanted to upload, and then received a message that it had failed to import. I tried tweaking a few paramaters, but I'm not sure what I'm doing. Are there any good tutorials or instructions about how to do this? I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.
