So there's a folder /usr/share/stuff in the root directory in stuff there are a bunch of java files with package org.name definitions at the top I am running javac test.java where test.java is in a subdomain I added /usr/share/stuff to my class path. and at the top of test.java I add import org.name But I get a package does not exist error...why? java import package share|improve this question asked package does not exist java command line Jun 16 '11 at 16:19 algorithmicCoder 2,480113987 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 16 down vote accepted Are they in the right subdirectories? If you put /usr/share/stuff on the class path, files defined with package org.name should be in /usr/share/stuff/org/name. EDIT: If you don't already know this, you should probably read this: http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/tooldocs/windows/classpath.html#Understanding EDIT 2: Sorry, I hadn't realised you were talking of Java source files in /usr/share/stuff. Not only they need to be in the appropriate sub-directory, but you need to compile them. The .java files don't need to be on the classpath, but on the source path. (The generated .class files need to be on the classpath.) You might get away with compiling them if they're not under the right directory structure, but they should be, or it will generate warnings at least. The generated class files will be in the right subdirectories (wherever you've specified -d if you have). You should use something like javac -sourcepath .:/usr/share/stuff test.java, assuming you've put the .java files that were under /usr/share/stuff under /usr/share/stuff/org/name (or whatever is appropriate according to their package names). share|improve this answer edited Jun 16 '11 at 17:09 answered Jun 16 '11 at 16:21 Bruno 73.3k7146226 Thanks

I have another java file BearExtra.java in directory structure com/example/model in same root directory as above. I am calling a method in BearExtra.java http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6665420/package-does-not-exist-error from Bear.java and I am getting the error that the package does not exist. I have imported com.example.model package in my java file. "package" Not import. package com.example; That is how you add the package. Then does not exist once the packages is added, you can import things from it. does the make sense? Feeling pretty lonely here! :-) Hi, I swear I'm doing everything correctly (AFAIK), yet Netbeans is giving me a "package X does not exist" error. My About window: Product Version: NetBeans IDE 6.7.1 (Build 200907230233) Java: 1.6.0_12; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 11.2-b01 System: Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb) Userdir: C:\Documents and Settings\User1\.netbeans\6.7 I have a jar file I have placed as follows: C:\JavaClasses\GoldParserEngine\Bin\hawkins-java-jar-1.3.jar With the sources file here: C:\JavaClasses\GoldParserEngine\Source\hawkins-java-source-v1.3.zip In Netbeans, I added a Library named GoldParserEngine where the Classpath = C:\JavaClasses\GoldParserEngine\Bin\hawkins-java-jar-1.3.jar and the Sources = C:\JavaClasses\GoldParserEngine\Source\hawkins-java-source-v1.3.zip NOte: I did not compile this JAR file, but when I explode it all the Class file are there matching the source files, the class files have the package statement in them, and the package statement in the source files as well is: package goldengine.java; In the Properties of my Java Application, I clicked on Libraries and then under the Compile tab I added a reference to the GoldParserEngine Library. In the Main class of my Project, I start with the following lines: package AppelSample; import java.io.*; import goldengine.java.*; Yet I get an error that 'Package goldengine.java does not exist." What boneheaded thing am I doing wrong? Sorry, I'm a bit rusty on my Netbeans and Java... Thanks! PaulLast edited by Tal
