recently got a good eBay deal on a DRAC 5 remote access card for my Dell PowerEdge 2900 server. Well it seemed like a good deal until I installed the card and got this message on bootup: Remote Access Controller detected

RAC virtual USB devices may not be available... According to the seller, the card was a "working pull," but the box looked like it had been wrapped around a basketball during shipment, so who knows what it endured underway. I spent an hour or so on the phone with Dell tech support and after confirming that the card was genuine, having me separately remove its two connector cables, and a few other tests, the rep concluded that the board was faulty. Flashing the ROM might help, but he checked the docs and confirmed that there is no way to flash the ROM if the card will not initialize. I was not looking forward to the lengthy USPS insurance claim process. Read the Readme I happened to be working with another DRAC 5 this week and needed to upgrade its firmware to version 1.51 so it would work with Internet Explorer 8 (on Windows 7). Hey, what's this in the Readme about "CONFIGURING THE RAC CARD FOR FLASH RECOVER MODE"? Wow it sounds complicated—console port redirection, serial connection, command line junk. But what have I got to lose? It's worth a shot. And it worked! After following the instructions, the DRAC initialized correctly and was accessible from Ctrl-E during boot and, once configured, from a web browser. Update 01/07/2011: There's a chance you can find out what's wrong without going through the entire flash process. Once you have a COM connection, you should see some status information as soon as you turn on the server. If you encounter further issues with the renamed .htaccess file, revert its name, and try restoring it from a backup. Resolution Be sure to upload .htaccess files in ASCII mode Set the permissions to 644, which makes it usable by the server, but prevents it from being read from a browser. "Error when reading from SSLSocket" Posted on January 14, 2016 by paulroberts69 I had this error this morning, it has something to do with later versions of Java disabling support for SSLv3, https://paulroberts69.wordpress.com/2016/01/14/drac-5-error-when-reading-from-ssl-socket/ I know there have been some serious SSL vulnerabilities of late so it may be related to that. Anyway, it seems that in order to get the remote KVM console redirection working with DRAC 5, https://books.google.com/books?id=TWML7Aqir5EC&pg=PA139&lpg=PA139&dq=drac+error+500&source=bl&ots=kJNHL3VXpz&sig=l6iP3jT2cvMxYmlwLoH3HZUjO0s&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj54_O61cLPAhUi4oMKHdfAD5cQ6AEIYjAJ you have to enable SSLv3. To do this find the java.security file on your system and edit it. I found it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_66\lib\security. Search for the line that starts "jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms" and comment it out drac error by putting a hash at the start. Save the file. The line ended up looking like this in my java.security file: #jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms=SSLv3, RC4, DH keySize < 768 Now try your remote console again and hopefully it'll work.
