The first didn’t go where I wanted and the second was Sisyphean. The internet had some solutions including “wait it out” and “delete the cache, cookies, and prefs” but none of worked error 1004 for me. I finally noticed that in the dock the apps which wouldn’t update were greyed out and had an X in their corner. Initially I avoided it not wanting to delete them or make some ugly mac app store surprise happen. It finally connected for me that ONLY those icons which needed resuming were greyed out. I hazarded clicking the x and was prompted (by the app store) whether I wanted to cancel the download or delete the app. Cancelling the download eliminated the problem. Apps are updated and all’s well with the world. Except apple support and UX, of course. They dropped the ball on this.
