You may use the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in (services.msc) and the Local Security Settings https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/982261 MMC snap-in (secpol.msc) to view the service configuration and the account configuration. Solution To solve this, start secpol.msc and add the AD FS Service account to the Generate security audits policy. In my case this problem occured after the AD FS Server, previously also a Domain Controller, was demoted to a https://itiseverywhere.wordpress.com/2015/06/11/error-1297-starting-adfssrv/ member server. A privilege that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration. You may use the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in (services.ms c) and the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in (secpol.msc) to view the service configuration and the account configuration. The platform error 1297 a is Server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.5. The account has the log on as a service right and is a member of the IIS_IUSRS local group. Managed service accounts are not an option at this time, although I don't know if that would return any better results. Has anyone else had any success with this configuration? Thanks. In your case, please give up your attempt and don't waste your time. Lex Li http://lextudio.com --------------------------- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Cause IIS metabase and/or crypto keys are corrupted on the server. Crypto keys are located in the 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys' folder, IIS Admin server depends upon the keys for encryption/decryption of metabase keys. In particular, IIS needs the keys with names starting from c23 and 7a4. Look at the suffix of the names of these keys which is starting after the '' character (underscore), it has to be equal to Machine GUID which may be found in the system registry at the following path - HKEYLOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\MachineGUID. So, the name of keys which are important for IIS are: c23***********************_MachineGUID 7a4***********************_MachineGUID If keys are broken or machine GUID has been changed and key were not regenerated then IIS will not be able to start. Resolution Restore crypto keys from backup. Additional information More detailed description of crypto keys and how they are used in IIS may be found by the following links: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vivekkum/archive/2009/02/14/machinekey-in-iis.aspx http://blogs.msdn.com/b/saurabh_singh/archive/2007/08/02/iisadmin-startup-issues.aspx Search Words IIS Admin Service IIS cannot start service-specific error 2148073478 (0x80090006) a914db3fdc7a53ddcfd1b2db8f5a1b9c 56797cefb1efc9130f7c48a7d1db0f0c 85a92ca67f2200d36506862eaa6ed6b8 46a8e394d6fa13134808921036a34da8 bd7fc88cf1b01f097749ae6f87272128 5356b422f65bdad1c3e9edca5d74a1ae caea8340e2d186a54
