Error 1706 Visual Studio 2003
Studio Setup and Installation Question 0 Sign in to vote I keep trying to install SP 1 for VS 2003 Enterprise Edition. When I browse to the vs_setup.msi file provided on the MSDN DVD's I get Error 1706 - File cannot be found and the installation rolls back. What is going on and how do I get SP 1 to install? TIA Monday, August 21, 2006 5:11 PM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote I got it to work by copying the VS_SETUP.MSI file to a local folder. Probably is an anti-virus issue (I can't disable mine). This is becoming a huge waste of time - perhaps I'll go without SP 1 until we move to VS 2005. Wednesday, August 23, 2006 2:24 AM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote wow, because I've just installed it, prompted me for the disc (MSDN also), I inserted it and off it went successfully installed. infact I did it just 30 mins ago. Make sure you have disabled your AV software as sometimes this can affect it. Any errors? What are the errors? look in the event log for any errors that may have been stored (start > run > eventvwr then check the application event log) Wednesday, August 23, 2006 2:27 AM Reply | Quote Moderator 0 Sign in to vote Here is all that is provided in the event log: Product: Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003 - English -- Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003 - English. share this, since it cost me 2.5 days... When running Visual Studio .NET 2003 as a Power User, if I pressed F1 for context-sensitive help, I either (consistently for particular highlighted keyword) got the relevant help or else visual studio would say "Please wait while Windows configures Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Developer 2003 - English" then grind away for a while trying to load something (unknown) from somewhere (unknown) and eventually fail with "Error 1706. No valid source could https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/79d2c8c8-d9f9-43e0-8ff2-d43f1ca56bcb/vs-2003-sp1-error-1706?forum=vssetup be found for product Visual Studio ..NET Enterprise Developer 2003 - English. The Windows installer cannot continue." Then when I clicked "OK", the sodding thing went off and tried to load it all again. Twice. And then finally it would show me the correct help, so it knew how to do it all along. After searching fruitlessly for solutions (Q297103 is http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/visual-studio-net-help-error-1706.1863789/ a classic "you are in a helicopter") and re-installing twice, I worked it out by looking inside the helpfiles. The offending help/web pages had an ActiveX control 59CC0C20-679B-11D2-88BD-0800361A1803 to do some cookie stuff. That classid should register C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSDN\CookDoc.dll so I found that file on my system and re-registered it. Which has magically worked. So, I hope this saves somebody else's time. Al. Al, Cambridge, UK, Jun 9, 2005 #1 Advertisements Show Ignored Content Want to reply to this thread or ask your own question?
