In order to check if any other instance of SQL Server was running, the DBA headed to services. He was right! There was an instance of SQL Server Express Edition already running. But this should not stop any new installation from proceeding. We wanted to get rid of that instance (since it a test box) but did not want to take any chances on a weekend. It is not strange to have wacky setups on test boxes. If we mess it up today, on a fine Monday morning the Application team will make lot of noise about their “critical” setup having issues. If you do not wish to uninstall Microsoft Office then a partial fix is as follows. Logon to each user account that has this problem in turn, and run the registry fix from M274473. Do not run this registry fix for an account that will be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User. Microsoft did not intend this fix to be used in this way. If it is then it will mess up Microsoft Office. The separate Microsoft fix for future users (who do not have an existing profile) detailed in M274473 has been tried but did not work. This is a strange issue that started happening a few weeks ago. I have BES running on Small Business Server 2003 for a single user. It used to run fine without issue. Nothing new was installed except periodic Windows updates. Here's the issue in greater detail: There are 3 MSDE instances installed on this server - Sharepoint, SBSMonitoring, and BES. The BES instance keeps stopping, and I cannot get it running again unless I stop all the blackberry services, start the BES database, then restart all the blackberry services. After I do that, it runs for approximately 2 hours, then stops again. When it stops, the event log gets flooded with errors from pretty much all the blackberry services. The other instances on MSDE don't seem to be affected, and the user states that he still receives email on his BB after the instance goes down. It appears that the MSIinstaller for SQL is causing the problem, but it only happens when the blackberry services are running. If I leave the services in the stopped state, it doesn't happen. Also, if I reboot the server, the BES instance of the MSDE database is in the stopped state, and again, I can't start it until I stop all the blackberry services. Here are the event log messages that come up when the BES instance goes down: Under Application: Event Type: Warning Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 1004 Date: 10/17/2007 Time: 10:08:00 AM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: HEINZ Description: Detection of product '{E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A}', feature 'SqlRun', component '{072BBB16-FE7A-405F-BBCC
