Some of the most common questions we get here at the storage team center around CHKDSK. If you have ever come across any event ID 55s in your system event log, this blog is for you. What is an event ID 55? Let’s start by looking at the error: Event Type: Error Event Source: NTFS Event ID: 55 Description: The file system structure on disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume "Drive_letter:" While the error description is direct and self-explanatory, we often receive calls from customers who want to better understand how this occurred and their subsequent options. How did we get into this situation to begin with? The file system does not proactively check each write (doing so would hugely impact performance, as you can imagine). NTFS instead has a logic that checks some reads for congruence. As a preventative measure, we can only suggest best practices such as keeping up to date with drivers and firmware. I have a Windows 7, home premium, service pack 1, system with a Hitachi disk HDS721064. For the past several weeks, Windows has been logging an 'event 55' which says 'The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume HP.' I run chkdsk and generally see another 'event 55' being logged within the next day. The Microsoft website which the event viewer takes me to is not particularly helpful. Does anyone have any experience with this type of issue or any suggestions? Thank you. If you do not have any then have you fully updated your installation of Win7. It contained a fix for this issue which I beleive is rolled into sp1. m 0 l ornelasbauer 8 September 2013 19:21:50 Smart status shows for Reallocated Sectors Count: Current 100, Worst 100, Threshold 5. Smart also shows drive health status as 'good'. I have gone back and checked my update history and do not see any updates that failed and were not then successfully installed. m 0 l Best solution popatim a c 1334 G Storage 8 September 2013 21:35:34 Run the drive manufacturers diagnostic software which should give you an error code so that you can initiate a warranty return.
