Windows 7 IT Pro > Windows 7 Networking Question 0 Sign in to vote I have a windows 7 pro workstation with one network adapter that I have configured to accept incoming VPN connections. I can connect to it via VPN on the local subnet and it shows 1 incoming connection. However I can't connect to it from another machine over the Internet and I get error 800. I have https://www.wiknix.com/vpn-error-800/ a public IP that is NAT to the adapter and the only firewall in between is the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. I've created 2 rules, 1 to allow TCP 1723 and another to allow GRE but it still won't accept connections. What could the problem be? I can connect to the computer via RDP so it doesn't appear to be a TCP firewall issue and I can also telnet 1723 https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/e9b73b95-4d3e-4600-91f5-a6fc6b96873c/vpn-connection-problem-error-code-800-the-remote-connection-was-not-made-because-the-attempted-vpn?forum=w7itpronetworking from another computer on the Internet. Also, I have a SBS 2003 server that accepts VPN connections on another public IP address (in the same block) and that works fine. I've tried disabling the Firewall service altogether in Windows 7 Pro, but that seems to block all incoming connections. I get this error (in Event Viewer's Application logs from RasClient): The user SYSTEM dialed a connection named Virtual Private Network which has failed. The error error 800 vpn code returned on failure is 628. The current VPN type setup (Properties -> Security -> Type of VPN) uses L2TP/IPSec with a pre-shared key. When I set the Security to automatic (which used to also work before), I see this error instead: The user SYSTEM dialed a connection named Virtual Private Network which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 720. In the System log, additionally, there is (from RasSstp): The initial Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol request could not be successfully sent to the server. This can be due to network connectivity issues or certificate (trust) issues. The detailed error message is provided below. Correct the problem and try again. The remote computer refused the network connection. I tried tracing the RAS layer using: netsh ras set tracing * enable ...I then attempt the connection again... netsh ras set tracing * disable The logs contained a single file which was the most helpful at telling me there was a problem, EXPLORER_RASAPI32.LOG...but it wasn't helpful at telling me exactly what that problem was as far as I can tell: [10236] 07-22 00:09:01:496: WaitForDialMachineEvent: Unblock i=1, h=0x22ec4250 [10236] 07-22 00:09:01:496: setting rasman state to 6 [10236] 07-22 00:09:01:496: NotifyCaller called for hPort:1 [10236] 07-22 00:09:01:496: NotifyCaller(nt=0x2,su=1,s=6,e=0,xe=0)...
