It is possible that your battery does not have enough power for the lens function. First connect your AC adapter or USB cable. Hold the shutter button while switching on the camera. Take a look at the lens, if some of the lens rings look crocked or not lined up try to gently wiggle it while holding the lens down. Some people have gotten good results by tapping the camera (freeing the lens to zoom). Since the camera was released 5 years ago, I wouldn't pay much money for a repair.
