Complete Example for Error Handlers Other asp net mvc error handling Versions Visual Studio 2010 .NET Framework 4 Visual Studio 2008 This code example includes elements for both page-level and application-level exception handling. Code Example Files The example consists of the following files: Web.config Global.asax Default.aspx ExceptionUtility (to be put in the App_Code folder) GenericErrorPage.aspx HttpErrorPage.aspx Http404ErrorPage.aspx DefaultRedirectErrorPage.aspx Web.config The following example shows the Web.config file. The customErrors section specifies how to handle errors that occur with file types that are mapped to ASP.NET, such as .aspx, .asmx, and .ashx files. (In IIS 6.0 and in IIS 7.0 in classic mode, static content files such as .html and .jpg files are not mapped to ASP.NET.) The settings in the example customErrors section cause any unhandled HTTP 404 (file not found) errors to be directed to the Http404ErrorPage.aspx file. If the user can help correct a problem, the page needs to return to the same place so the user has a context for understanding what to do. A page-level handler returns you to the page, but there is no longer anything on the page because instances of controls are not created. To provide the user any information, you must specifically write it to the page. You would probably use a page-level error handler to log unhandled errors or to take the user to a page that can display helpful information. This code example shows a handler for the Error event in an ASP.NET Web page. This handler catches all exceptions that are not already handled within Try/Catch blocks in the page. After you handle an error, you must clear it by calling the ClearError method of the Server obj

Rich Custom Error Handling with ASP.NET By Eli Robillard January 2004 Applies to: Microsoft® ASP.NET Summary: Adding your own custom error handling to your ASP.NET Web applications can ease debugging and improve customer satisfaction. While developers need detailed error reports while debugging, visitors to the site should be shielded from these. Technical errata only serve to confuse, disappoint, and reveal cracks in the armor. If an error page is displayed, it should serve both developers and end-users without sacrificing aesthetics. An ideal error page maintains the look and feel of the site, offers the ability to provide det
