You can have following type of errors in your JSP code: Checked exceptions: Achecked exception is an exception that is typically a user error error handling servlet or a problem that cannot be foreseen by the programmer. For example, if a file is to be opened, but the file cannot be found, an exception occurs. These exceptions cannot simply be ignored at the time of compilation. Runtime exceptions: A runtime exception is an exception that occurs that probably could have been avoided by the programmer. As opposed to checked exceptions, runtime exceptions are ignored at the time of compliation. Errors: These are not exceptions at all, but problems that arise beyond the control of the user or the programmer. Errors are typically ignored in your code because you can rarely do anything about an error. For example, if a stack overflow occurs, an error will arise. They are also ignored at the time of compilation. This tutorial will give you few simple and elegant ways to handle run time exception/error occuring in your JSP code. Using Exception Object: The exception object is an instance of a subclass of Throwable (e.g., java.lang. NullPointerException) and is only available in error pages. Following is the list of important medthods available in the Throwable class. SNMethods with Description 1public String getMessage()
Returns a detailed message about the exception that has occurred. This message is initialized in the Throwable constructor. 2public Throwable getCause() Returns the cause of the exception as represented by a Throwable object. 3public String toString() Returns the name of the class concatenated with the result of getMeContentHandling JSP Page Errors Any number of exceptions

occurs, include the following page directive at the beginning of your JSP page: <%@ page errorPage="file-name" %> The Duke’s Bookstore application page tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/web/bookstore2/web/template/preludeErrorPage.jspf contains http://www.tutorialspoint.com/jsp/jsp_exception_handling.htm the directive: <%@ page errorPage="errorpage.jsp"%> The following page directive at the beginning of tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/web/bookstore2/web/error/errorpage.jsp indicates that it is serving as an error page: <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %> This directive makes an object of type javax.servlet.jsp.ErrorData available to the error page so that you can retrieve, interpret, and possibly display https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19575-01/819-3669/bnahi/index.html information about the cause of the exception in the error page. You access the error data object in an EL (see Unified Expression Language) expression by way of the page context. Thus, ${pageContext.errorData.statusCode} retrieves the status code, and ${pageContext.errorData.throwable} retrieves the exception. You can retrieve the cause of the exception using this expression: ${pageContext.errorData.throwable.cause} For example, the error page for Duke’s Bookstore is as follows: <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/fmt" prefix="fmt" %>
: ${pageContext.errorData.throwable.cause} Note – You can also define error pages for the WAR that contains a JSP page. If error pages are defined for both the WAR and a JSP page, the JSP page’s error page takes precedence. Author: Deron Eriksson Description: This Java tutorial describes how to create a JSP error page to handle error handling exceptions. Tutorial created using: Windows XP || JDK 1.5.0_09 || Eclipse Web Tools Platform 2.0 (Eclipse 3.3.0) || Tomcat 5.5.20 Page: 1 2> When an exception is thrown in your web application and it is not caught, you will typically see the result featuring the exception displayed in your browser window, as shown here: handling in jsp Rather than displaying the above default page when an exception occurs, you can redirect the user to a custom-written error page for a particular type of exception. You can do this via the error-page element in web.xmlW, in which you can specify an exception-type and the location of the resource where a user should be sent if an error occurs. In this example, I specified the exception-type as java.lang.Throwable so that all exceptions would be sent to the error.jsp page.

Exception Handling in JSP is much easier than Java Technology exception handling. Although JSP Technology also uses the same exception class objects. It is quite obvious that you dont want to show error stack trace to any random user surfing your website. You can't prevent all errors in your application but you can atleast give a user friendly error response page. Ways to perform Exception Handling in JSP JSP provide 3 different ways to perform exception handling: Using isErrorPage and errorPage attribute of page directive. Using
