Exception and Error Handling in Visual Basic Visual Studio 2010 Other Versions Visual Studio 2008 Visual Studio 2005 Visual Studio .NET 2003 Visual Basic supports structured exception (error) handling, which allows the program to detect and possibly recover from errors during execution. Visual Basic uses an enhanced version of the Try...Catch...Finally syntax already supported by other languages such as C++. Structured exception handling combines a modern control structure (similar to Select Case or While) with exceptions, protected blocks of code, and filters.Structured exception handling, which is the recommended method of error handling in Visual Basic, makes it easy to create and maintain programs with robust, comprehensive error handlers. Exceptions provide a way to transfer control from one part of a program to another. VB.Net exception handling is built upon four keywords: Try, Catch, Finally and Throw. Try: A Try block identifies a block of code for which particular exceptions will be activated. It's followed by one or more Catch blocks. Catch: A program catches an exception with an exception handler at the place in a program where you want to handle the problem. The Catch keyword indicates the catching of an exception.
