There are lots of things in life that we’ve simply come to accept – paper forms that we download as a PDF, print, complete by hand, data entry error mail/fax for processing and wait (days…often weeks) for an answer. If we’re the organisation on the receiving end of these forms – we’ve come to accept that our mailroom will be busy processing these paper documents, handwriting resembles what a spider produces after falling in an ink-well and despite our best efforts to explain what information is mandatory, a high percentage of forms will be missing required information or the phone number will have 9 digits, the date of birth is the date the form was completed ARGHHHH!!!! It’s a bad experience for the form filler and form processor. But do you know what data entry is really costing you? A quality payroll process is one which results in a low payroll error rate. This is something both the top performers and non top performers of the study emphasized as both had a low payroll error rate of less than 0.04%. Of the errors that did occur, the majority originated from late or missing timecards. More specifically, during the study, The Hackett Group looked at the following 13 error sources. You can see from the table below that, on average, top performers has 7% less late data entry and 7% less payroll data entry error*: Today, employees must be equipped to meet new payroll requirements and do more than just data entry. Instead, it is analytical activities that employees must increasingly be able to tackle and company’s can improve employees’ ability by emphasizing their education and training. For example, top performers in the study had 7% more certified employees, 24 more hours of exempt annual training and 6 less hours of non exempt annual training.
