Fatal Ni Connect Error 6413 Tracing Not Turned On
Windows, 32-bit client) Technote (troubleshooting) Problem(Abstract) When creating a data source to an Oracle database on 64-bit Windows with a 32-bit Oracle client, an Oracle bug stops the connection from being successful. The following generic error message is returned by Cognos: "QE-DEF-0285 The logon failed" and "Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. ORA-06413: Connection not open" Symptom The following line should be seen within the sqlnet.log file: Fatal NI connect error 6413, connecting to: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=host)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=service_name)(CID=(PROGRAM=C:\Program Files (x86)\cognos\bin\BmtMDProviderMain.exe)(HOST=host)(USER=user)))) Cause This is caused by a bug with the Oracle client. Oracle client cannot resolve third party software applications which have "special" characters in their install paths (which includes parentheses). Environment 64-bit Windows, 32-bit Oracle client, installation path : Program Files (x86) Diagnosing the problem Perform a SQL Net trace to see whether the sqlnet.log file contains the error message noted above. Resolving the problem 1) Find the location of the application that is generating the error. Check the path to this location and see if it contains any parenthesis. If so, you must relocate the application to a directory without any parenthesis in the path. 2) Install patches to Oracle client install as per the link in the Related information section of this article. Install works fine, but for the life of me, I cannot log into the installed database. I've changed the SYS and SYSTEM passwords on install and am I using those logins to get in. In Enterprise Manager, I keep getting the error: https://community.oracle.com/thread/1102910 ORA-06413: Connection not open. Any ideas? Totally Stumped. In sqlnet.log, I get: sbi-dev works when I ping it... is it possible that port 1521 is blocked on the server? I am doing everything locally on the server (open enterprise manager) Fatal NI connect error 6413, connecting to: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=sbi-dev)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=INTRANET)(CID=(PROGRAM=C:\Program Files (x86)\Oracle\jre\1.1.8\bin\jrew.exe)(HOST=SBI-DEV)(USER=Administrator)))) VERSION INFORMATION: TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 9.2.0.1.0 - Production Time: 16-JUL-2010 09:34:23 Tracing not turned on. the same machine as manifold, I run into the following error message when trying to establish a connection.ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specifiedI've tried creating different user names without success. Attached is an image of my oracle settings (from http://www.georeference.org/forum/t37255 oracle) and another image of the connection attempt in manifold.Logging on as administrator didn't help. My local IT guys don't know what's wrong either.Any help would be appreiciated.Attachments:connection error.jpgoracle setup.jpg mechalas813 post(s)#05-Mar-07 11:04 Does the hostname "xe" exist in DNS?If you are running Oracle on the same machine as Manifold, why not just use "localhost" as the server name in the DB console? Mike Pelletier1,286 post(s)#05-Mar-07 16:32 I don't believe a hostname fatal ni "xe" exists in DNS but I'm not sure how to check. I tried using "localhost", "local", the IP address, and the computer name for the server name without any luck. I'm running windows XP professional 64-bit version 2003 service pack 1.Below is want's in the file tnsnames.ora. It appears that this file attempts to make the connection so I thought in might be useful info.XE = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST fatal ni connect = C01051)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = XE) ) )EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = PLSExtProc) (PRESENTATION = RO) ) )ORACLR_CONNECTION_DATA = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = CLRExtProc) (PRESENTATION = RO) ) ) mechalas813 post(s)#05-Mar-07 20:31 The error "TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" comes from the Oracle libraries, not from Manifold. It generally means that the hostname for the Oracle service you are asking for can't be resolved (the hostname lookup failed). There are a couple of different things you can try.1. If "localhost" doesn't work for you, then try 127.0.0.1 as the server name in the database console (that's the loopback address for a network adapter, so in effect it points to yourself). Using hostnames for the server eliminates the need to set up a service name in your tnsnames.ora file, though it is slightly less portable.2. Your tnsnames.ora file is pointing to the host C01051 as the hostname for the service alias "XE", which may be your problem. Is your machine named C01051? If not, put "127.0.0.1" as the HOST and then re-attempt your connection with the server name of "XE".A Google search turns u
