This is why Red Hat (as an example) uses ntpdate the first time you start the ntpd service to set the local time to be in the right ball park. You should also make sure that the ntp servers you are syncing with are relatively close. You can do these steps manually if you want (e.g. you're not running Red Hat which includes the ntpdate step in it's restart script): # /etc/init.d/ntpd stop # ntpdate

I got the following error from ntpd daemon repeatedly. Jan 1 22:01:12 RHEL4-001 ntpd[3066]: frequency error -504 PPM exceeds tolerance 500
error 512 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM Should I be worried, or should I just configure logcheck to ignore them? I can't seem to find any good information about this error, except that is has something to do with the hardware clock being too far behind the ntp clock, which is probably related to this problem: http://forum.bytemark.co.uk/viewtopic.php?id=569 jmitchell 2006-02-11 09:11:13 UTC #2 Has this been fixed? My logs are still full of this, and judging by ntpq -p my local clock really is drifting all over the place. My ntp.conf uses 0.uk.pool.ntp.org, 1.uk.pool.ntp.org, 2.uk.pool.ntp.org. Does anyone have any tips or pointers to getting this fixed?
