This is why Red Hat (as an example) uses ntpdate the first time you start the ntpd service to set the local time to be in the right ball park. You should also make sure that the ntp servers you are syncing with are relatively close. You can do these steps manually if you want (e.g. you're not running Red Hat which includes the ntpdate step in it's restart script): # /etc/init.d/ntpd stop # ntpdate

time you will get errors as given below, while troubleshooting about NTP issues. 9 Feb 11:39:49 ntpd[19959]: frequency error -653 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM 9 Feb 11:41:58 ntpd[19959]: frequency error -651 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM 9 Feb 11:46:12 ntpd[19959]: frequency error -650 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM 9 Feb 11:49:49 ntpd[19959]: frequency error -650 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM 9 Feb 11:53:44 ntpd[19959]: frequency error -649 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM 9 Feb 11:54:48 ntpd[19959]: frequency error -648 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM This issue basically refers to following reasons. 1. You have a problematic source. 2. NTP offset between ntpd computed time and internal clock is big. Workaround: # service ntpd stop -- Stop the NTPD first # ntpd -qg -- NTPD exits if offset exceeds sanity limit. # service ntpd start -- Start the NTP Permanent Solution: Fix the NTP server Posted by Manas Ranjan Tripathy at 10:23:00 PM Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest Labels: Devops, frequency error, ntp, PPM Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom) Google+ Badge Blog Archive Blog Archive October (5) September (4) August (1) July (18) June (8) May (10) April (6) March (3) February (7) January (11) November (2) October (31) March (7) Follow by Email Translate Other Posts linux (33) Devops (25) VCS (23) cluster (23) GrayLog (7) RHEL7 (6) Puppet (5) elasticsearch (4) server (4) yum (4) Load balancer (3) bonding (3) PATCHING (2) ballooning (2) Manage Jenkins (1) Manas Ranjan Tripathy Tweets by ManasTri Facebook Widget Manas TripathyCreate Your Badge Subscribe To This Blog Posts Atom Posts Comments Atom Comments Contact Me Name Email * Message * Featured Post GrayLog ..
