Description David Sandler 2009-06-04 15:12:16 UTC When compiling a program with gcc, we are receiving the following error... gcc: error trying to exec 'as': execvp: No such file or directory We checked that 'as' exists, and it does. Please advise. Comment 1 Andrew Pinski 2009-06-04 15:25:24 gcc error trying to exec 'cc1obj' execvp no such file or directory UTC the gcc driver program is not finding as. Comment 2 David Sandler 2009-06-04 15:28:33 UTC (In reply to comment #1) > the gcc driver program is not finding as. What is the appropriate course of action? Comment 3 Paolo Carlini 2009-06-04 15:47:55 UTC Properly install as. This is definitely not a GCC issue. Comment 4 David Sandler 2009-06-05 13:37:59 UTC I'm running RHEL5 on an x86_64 box from HP. I believe gcc and as were preconfigured when the OS was installed on the box. In what other ways would I know if as was not properly installed? Do you have any tips on what is the correct way to install as? Comment 5 Jakub Jelinek 2009-06-05 14:30:07 UTC You haven't told us haw you have configured gcc, if it was a native build or cross, etc. If it is a native build, checking that /usr/bin/as exists is the first step. You can e.g. strace the gcc driver to find out where exactly it is looking for as. On linux you have /bin and /usr/bin, no big deal. On Cygwin you have C:\cygwin\bin. Then mount points are set like this. C:\cygwin\bin on /usr/bin C:\cygwin on / So technically you could represent C:\cygwin\bin with /bin or /usr/bin, although as stated above the former will not work. share|improve this answer edited Apr 23 '12 at 15:16 answered Apr 23 '12 at 3:32 Steven Penny 1 By any chance do you have any idea why this is an issue? –Michael Burr Apr 23 '12 at 5:53 1 I'm curious what the underlying problem is when /bin is in the path before /usr/bin. –Michael Burr Apr 23 '12 at 8:16 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. It powered up fine, but I had to run yum-complete-transaction cleanuponly and an rpm --rebuilddb command to clean things up. After doing this, I attempted to install the VBox additions, and was met with the following:Code: Select allgcc: error trying to exec '/usr/libexec/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.5/cc1': execv: Exec format error I checked the file, and it was empty:Code: Select all[root@cockpit ~]# gcc error trying file /usr/libexec/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.5/cc1
/usr/libexec/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.5/cc1: empty
So I removed gcc, kernel-devel, libgcc, kernel-headers, and reinstalled. This did not fix the problem. I removed again and then removed the directory /usr/libexec/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.5/ (this was probably not my best idea, but cc1 was empty and nothing else was in there). At this point, I've installed gcc and libgcc again and I still have no cc1 executable.I have a hello world C program to test with:Code: Select all[root@cockpit ~]# cat hello.c
#include
main () {
printf("Hello World");
return 0;
}
[root@cockpit ~]# gcc hello.c
